PC or not??

Question

Never thought I would be asking this because I really haven't cared but after making up labels again today for all my plants it appears it bugs me!!

I am pretty good at id'ing Trichs but to be honest I still have no idea what is a true Pach and what is PC. Well at least not visually anyway.

Have a look at the plants below and tell me what you think.

Thanks for looking at a tired subject, I know, humour me!

Predominant cultivar.

I'd also say they all look PC, but there are a few non-PC clones around Australia that look very similar.

I would say all but plant 2 are PC. Not for sure though. Looks super similar, but those "V" notches above the areoles make me think it's something else.

All PC. Second Plant could have something else in it but pretty sure the PC is involved there too.

#2 definitely looks PC as well. Have all of those been growing in the same conditions for a while Getafix?

yeah i've seen PC show all the same characteristics in all of the pics in my zone even side by side with one having the V marks
but most of them without ...

I'd say PC on all of them.. but even here in the states I think there are look alikes ... I wonder has anyone ever bred pc with non pc...
I recall Trucha saying something about PC having something in its family tree with long yellow spines.. I had some pc crosses show
some long yellows but could have been the daddy's influence

there is shit loads of pc crosses in Australia. Most of the ones i know about, (apart from a few particular old clones) have only been bred in the last 5 (or maybe a bit more) years or so & so are probably not big enough to have been in proper mass circulation yet.

amongst others I have a PC x psycho0 i got off PD as a tiny seedling that looks almost entirely like pc except some subtle differences & subtly different growth habits etc. It's basically a PC with some serious extra balls.. i gave one cutting of this to a member here a year or so ago & will be spreading it around more as soon as i can.. I just hope the labeling is kept up to speed to avoid confusion in the future..

I postulate that PC is a cross between a short spined plant, likely a pachanoi and a cuzcoensis form.

I base this on hybrid traits, PC traits and the hybrid vigor PC has.

I believe it is a very interesting plant in many regards.

As to lookalikes... I have grown many crosses and now and again an offspring will look similar, but there are always some clear distinctions. Some can look similar but nothing I have seen looks identical.

i've only grown some PC x SS02/01 ... with PC as the mother plant and I think I have 9 or 10 grafts of that one that took off to decent size about half of them look much like PC so far... time will tell if they show some differing traits but at this point in those 4 I just see a minor variance in spine length... one other has short spines but a different arrangement and more spines per aereole than PC..

2 of them are long spined blondes a couple have medium sized spines and interesting arrangment which I think are influenced by the father plant... the short spined one with the neat arrangment of spines is showing some blue on the tip, I hope it goes all the way powdery... a couple of these were really fast growing, I only had one other graft that outdid the fastest 2 of the PC crosses in growth, and its likely a cuzco, but I think alot of my grafts would have had larger scions if they were in bigger pots

im definitely going to grow out all the short spined ones and the blue ones... one of the thinner blue-ish ones has some spines that remind me just a little of bridgesii... I know PC's can sometimes show blue but having grown some PCs in vey rich soil for a year they come out a rich dark green color and the thicker ones have v notches... I was gonna take a pic of those but I just can't get to them now they're stuffed in the Hoophouse

Gunter the cuczo theory doesn't really stick to me, you mean somthing like scopXcuzco resultiing in this?

I have the "proper" US PC and I also got ALF and OMAR from OZ, which seem to be PC or PC relatives. Cannot honestly tell there's any distinction...

a nice trick would be to try and cross them, that would prove that there are PC variants, if seed occurs that is

I prefered to pollinate them with a Yowie flower instead this year
