whats the significance of the little ridge above the spines of Trichocereus

I was taking some pics of some plants and noticed the variation of the little ridge lines above the spines. It reminds me of bird wings and I remember reading something about the reference of eagles somewhere. Does anyone have any links to some reading in regards to this?

Not relevant, BUT, I was told a great bit of advice for those ridges; if ever you have cuttings and aren't sure of the orientation, then look for the ridges and that way is 'UP'.
