Growing Virola !! - or trying to find the way through the jokers and thieves .. : Mission Lightening Tree, The hunt for "Red" Otoba

Recommended Posts

Hey horsey,

looks to be a portuguese stamp on that letter mate :(

avião is a portuguese word.

thanks dude , maybe they came from france, to Roze [via portugal] afterall

if they sprout i'll eat my words but doesn't look likely and i'm weary of the hunt - enough to wring necks about it ..

just fuming and red mist i guess... but the franquia threw me and my mind just translated as france

I'm just told it turns out that it was ethnoplantes telling of how viable the seeds are in a trade for good caapi seeds we all loved on the sts caapi giveaway by that super dude EIRN at sts ...

EIRN's seeds are amazing and the guy must be another plantsman baddass we could all maybe learn from.

and i trusted Roze because he was who was sharing EIRN's seeds in europe in that cool caapi giveaway..

well i dnno who it was that strikes again .. i wonder if their burst face is worth 2 old unviable V' sebifera nuts to them tho? and that's assuming the ethnoplantes nuts are actually real 'sebbies' anyway ..

I hear you man, ive been after this genus for a long time. always close, but never there. the few seeds i trusted from brazil always got nabbed by customs :( Might try again with that friend if his trees are setting seed. but it was touchy.

I'm sure you'd do well by these trees Kada if all the years of studying your site after it kept cropping up in searches while i was broke and out of luck , which kept me going and learning through the infancy of my ethno studies;.. are anything to go by .

for some reason each time i give up on them .. a lead appears ...

still watching the post box for now and counting my blessings that I'm not alone in the hunt.

Wish you the best of luck in the hunt and hope i can share any successes or failures in bashing out a way forward for the love of these majestic swamp gods..

good to know you also were "thunderstruck" by the "lightening trees" :)

i wish i knew anything about customs in your part of the world ..

all thanks to ...cayany06 for a source and making opportunity available

$_12.JPG?set_id=2$_12.JPG?set_id=2

:)

And Torsten for that 2005(i think it was) thread on germinating sebifera that gave me the incentive to try harder, and EG for priceless advice too

finger's x'd for some real alive sebifera in summer from a link I managed to find from Guyana in my tireless

searching and researching over the years out of love for these amazing tree spirits..

always character building i guess

and at least something that seems finally genuine.. came out from the rubble.

moral of the story?

lol - seems to be: if you try and don't succeed , give up .. then it might find you ?

i have to thank the unwittingly "gifting" of Peijotl , though hard.. {cost me fkn £80!}

but seemed to still wisely teach in the process by proximity again,

and the joy they must bring to the source who fleeced me for so much so watch them

.. all for this link to cayany06 so i could go buy some virola seeds of my own.

and to make fun of me along the way .. just to add to the insult ..

should i really be thanking Roze for that? I think not ..

-all this to try and reach the ultimate goal of having a breeding pair or two , of miniature lightening trees.

what a day !!

and in retrospect...

I can't believe the universe, sky , earth , mother nature.. whatever that was ... was tryna warn me about the possible fire from the melting smouldering flu -via a song i thought fun to upload while i was "on fire" myself - before it happened...

well i believe it now lol

so , those two floaters sank eventually  ...

kept them separate for justin [case]

the labelled pic of 3 nuts in my hand tells which one is the new surinamensis ...with 2 dead sebifera [from ethnobastesplantes] ..next to them for a comparison shot

22 march 2016 one virola surinamensis with two dead sebifera on right (20).jpg

-edit- to add pic to save folk searching and to remove a music vid that i thought was cool at the time but just got on my tits in the end

it was just one of the acclimatization stages on the way to 30C from the cooler journey prior to arrival

(26C in there atm)

and will be the last time i dig 47 seeds up twice a day to check them lol

would hate to accidentally break one if theyre gna go for it

i will just stick to watering them twice a day ..

and if any swampiness exceeds 1cm depth in their growing pods ..

i will wick away with a supersponge .. so as to keep it swampy..

-and still be able to add this twice daily watering with aquarium water heated up by mixing in a little from the hot tap.

-edit- oh yeah , that was in the "caapitarium" tank , nuth'n happened anywhere else

-and this would be day #5

-and what i can tell you is that white nobble on the nut is protruding and a very much cleaner white than when i had scuffed the "kernel" of a few back when "picking shell"

tropilab bad news http://davesgarden.com/products/gwd/c/3470/

- my own experiences were trying to buy virola seeds every 2 months for over a year always got the reply "not ready wait 2 months" and that was only if i kept paying and being bounced back ... fkn time wasters

ended up whizzing up the husks in a coffee grinder and "watering" them back onto the seeds just in case i was missing something vital from them but forgot to say ..

oddly enough i was just on about kettles with a pal in pm earlier :)

I've never had the patience to work with difficult to germinate seeds but I think I'm catching on.

cleared out the virolarium today and gave it a good clean down .. and re-plonked the pots back in ..

found 2 more matching humidity domes just one to go :)

the others that were "making do for now" fit the rfb and caapitarium pots much better

-but had to use my square "peijotl pots" that I'd had in storage, for the virolarium swamp box, to get as close to a snug fit and minimum space waste as possible ..

-just about to give them their 2nd daily watering ..

I decided to use a cheap garden sprayer for this since last night ..

and because it was battering it down last night outside..

i nipped out with two jugs and caught myself 2litres of nice acidic ph4 sky juice to spray them with .

nothing breached on the surface .. my minds going over time imagining them sprouting under there though :)

i hope they are..

oh yeah , to anybody wondering about the variable nutz size pre shell/husk removal ..

i can only think that's just normal ?

.. and when i examine my acacia seeds i notice variation in size in a single species too

so on that basis , i guess it not matching size as closely as i'd've liked... is possibly just my noob-dom

and sorry if i got anyone worried over size of seeds in a pm ..

or different speeds of water take up post shell/husk removal? ..

and to spice up an otherwise uneventful virolarium day .. i figured [seeing as this thread now has some mileage to it and the image links are beginning to fail] I would rip some pics from the net instead of link them and..

then they can stay right where they are :)

just lately I've been following the toucans so here's some toucan shots with virolas

i wonder if successful , one could be tested in the aquarium to see if it will make a buttress ..

the buttress is so they can still have "root" breathing when the forests flood

and from learning about that in aquaria .. that can mean some 13-16 feet of water for months

would be super to have found a freshwater "mangrove" for a palaudarium style jungle aquascape in the virola

.. but maybe if i thought of it , so did someone else, maybe many .. and maybe a few of them have had success already?

hopefully it wont poison my fishies :3 but would be nice to make the water immaculate for discus who i guess would breed amongst the trees like birds in the flooded forest ..

willow cuttings do an immaculate job of emptying the water of excess nutes .. hopefully virolas will

hmm maybe i should rename the virolarium to "the flooded forest" ..

or perhaps the next aquascape.. since i'll have to dismantle it and relocate it soon to start again again yet again again

after deciding to leave the soil/moss bed pots ones alone ..
