Pach ID

Question

So I got given a big chunk of pach that came from a huge plant growing at a mates place that his parents say have been there since before they moved in 30 something years ago.

This chunk came down in a storm from a mother plant that's pushing 2 stories tall with multiple arms and flowers like crazy, unfortunately I've no pics of the mother though :(

Anyway it looks different to the few PC pachs I've got growing so any thoughts on whether its standard PC pach or something a little more exotic. Its definitely got a bluer hue on the new growth than my other PC pachs but I've got no old growth cuttings of PC or any other pach's for comparison.

This is some new growth on the stump.

And some PC pach growing pretty much next to it in the same conditions for comparison.

That's totally normal on an old PC, it's a dead giveaway that the plant is in fact PC.

The second one that you say is PC actually looks less PC than the first but it might still be PC as well and is plump and round like that coz it's well hydrated and only has five ribs and has been grown in the shade making it stay thin so it looks a bit not-PC but is still probably PC.

And yes you can be plump and round and thin at the same time. How's that for politically correct?

Yeah, I'm not going to put it past both those plants being the PC either, but damn they look like they love the environment.

I for the life of me cannot see any differences between the OP's first plant and a pic recently posted by MSSmith:

IMO the picture of MsSmith"s cacti has white spines that point more downward opposed too the image posted by Ihb2444 where his golden spines that point straight and more upward.

Ihb2444, your cactus looks similar too what I was thinking could be T.Pachanoi Claude, but it could most definitely be a very nice looking PC as well . I think I'd call it a PC .

Nice cactus :)

Hi Mr. Do Right! Can you please point me towards a pic of claude? :)Couldnt find anything on SAB and i never heard the name.

Cacti are extremely variable and the looks depends highly on the Growing Conditions, Treatment, Soil, Sun, and so on. And hat´s the problem with people naming clones. In many cases, they are the only ones that have them and don´t spread them in the community so it´s absolutely pointless to use names for clones that are unavailable. A picture of a certain clone is worthless because that does not mean that the cactus can't look totally different under changed conditions. Naming clones makes sense with clones that are very special and easily recognizable. Besides, many people just randomly name every Cactus they have. Just imagine someone has a PC Pachanoi and calls it Maude because the PC looks slightly different because of the conditions it was grown in, just as an example.I haven't seen the claude clone because I was not able to find a pic but pachanoi clones are particularly difficult because they can be extremely variable. There are a handful that are really unique, but generally speaking, large Pachanois can look absolutely different than smaller Ones, and so on.

I think we need a standard for naming clones. If someone decides he has a clone that is unique enough, he should make a whole lot of cuttings and send cuttings to some of our members. Better 10 than 5. Skilled growers don´t need a large cutting so this shouldn't be a problem. We could even areole graft them to produce a good amount. I am absolutely for the practice of naming Clones under certain conditions. But they should be available.

Besides, every clone will be described in the database now to avoid double Naming and easy comparison.

Thanks for the response's everyone!

I haven't removed the spines on the old growth in the first 3 pics it came that way although it was pretty beaten up from the storm it came down in.

They do definitely love the environment MsSmith I'm actually a little shocked the big stump took off the way it did based on how beaten up it was but I guess

trichs can certainly take a serious punishing and bounce back pretty quickly.

I think your description of "plump and round and thin at the same time" hits the spot perfectly Micromegas, the plant overall isnt to fat but the trunk just down from the apex

is like a pentagon, nearly straight sides.

Looks like the labels will stay as T. pachanoi then :)
