UK government has announced new drug driving limits

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

UK government has announced new drug driving limits which are set to come into place this autumn.

Recently set out by ministers, the new limits include 10 micrograms of cocaine, two micrograms of cannabis and one microgram of LSD per litre of blood.

Traces of these drugs can stay in the body for some time, so this legislation is apparently designed to allow for that. So, if you were getting high a few days before being pulled over and tested for dodgy driving, you won't necessarily be charged, as long as your within the proposed limits. Good news for caners who went a bit too heavy on Friday but still need to take the car to work on Monday.

There are also allowances for drivers who are on prescription drugs too: 80 micrograms of morphine, 500 micrograms of methadone and 550 micrograms of diazepam per litre of blood are the amounts allowed.

Making up the first legislation of its kind, the thresholds have been set to prevent those taking prescribed medicine being prosecuted unfairly but limits for amphetamines are to be re-considered in the future.

If drivers are found to be over the newly-set limits, they will be penalised similarly to drink-drivers.

Re: UK government has announced new drug driving limits

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

the consultation had significantly higher limits for some

Drug (short description) Recommended threshold limit in blood(μg/L) Recommended threshold limit in blood (μg/L ), where more than 20 mg alcohol is also present in 100 ml blood

THC tetrahydrocannabinol (the main active ingredient of cannabis) 5 μg/L 3 μg/L

Cocaine (an illicit drug) 80 μg/L 40 μg/L

BZE benzoylecgonine (the main breakdown product of cocaine in the body) 500 μg/L combination with alcohol

Amphetamine (an illicit drug, which is sometimes also prescribed for example for the treatment of Attention Deficit and Hyperactivity Disorder) 600 μg/L 300 μg/L

Methamphetamine (an illicit drug) 200 μg/L 100 μg/L

MDMA Ecstasy (an illicit drug mainly used in a clubbing environment) 300 μg/L 150 μg/L

Ketamine (an anaesthetic also misused in a clubbing environment) 200 μg/L 100 μg/L

Morphine (To note: morphine is a breakdown product of heroin) 80 μg/L 40 μg/L

Methadone (a drug with medical uses, prescribed for heroin 500 μg/L 250 μg/L

Diazepam (a hypnotic drug prescribed for anxiety) 550 μg/L 275 μg/L

from http://www.drugs-forum.com/forum/loc...5&linkid=13281 they are still to come up with a recommended level for Amphetamine so that patients who take medicine for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder are not affected.

Post Quality Evaluations: Great additional information.

How will they test the blood at the road side or will they have to take everyone back to station and arrange for a doctor to take blood. I can't see that working.

looks like there's some sort of preliminary road side test than back to the station for a blood sample to be taken.

This law is so flawed its unreal. I personally think this is just a money-making scheme for lawyers because the excuses are endless. Who's to say you didn't smoke a joint in the morning and went for a drive in the evening fully functional. Or what if you exceed the limit but you smoked yesterday? Don't even get me started on situations where your friend is smoking in the car but you haven't you will still read as exceeding the limit.

What is the law in your state?

In S.A. you will be charged and convicted for ANY AMOUNT of THC in your system, even if you last had a puff the day before yesterday, and had long since returned to complete sobriety, which is manifestly unjust, and unfair, when compared with the graduated scale of alcohol infraction charges;

<.05% for full licence holders = no penalty

>.05 but <.08 = reduced penalty

>.08 = full penalty

Justice is once again noticeable by its absence!!!

No wonder many people switch to legal, or formerly legal highs, to avoid detection for cannabis infringements.

It's about time a graduated scale was adopted in this, and other backward Australian states, perhaps using the UK guidelines to begin with, similarly to how the restrictions on blood alcohol content were introduced.
