Zonad Posted February 22, 2020 Went for a stroll this morning. Saw 1 cube and about 10 fresh cyans. Not like the last couple of weeks. Do cubes and Cyans grow seasonally In SEQ or do you just have to go out after a bucket load of rain? and then wait for it to rain again? Also do we gets subs or any other psychedelic mushrooms throughout the year. I have googled this stuff but get mixed responses and would like to hear from the group. -RC- Posted February 22, 2020 In a nutshell, yes, they are seasonal as soil temps are a big factor for fruiting. Rain is essential as mushrooms can be around 90% water. Subs can be found in QLD. Wet>dry for a few days seems to be a good pattern, but do they disintegrate if it's wet again or do they keep pushing up? -RC- Posted February 25, 2020 Usually the active mushrooms of SE QLD will wait a few days after rain to flush, but it is all dependent on their exposure and how much actually falls around them. Imo the best weather for mushroom foraging is when the humidity is pretty much 100% (i.e. light misting rain with occasional showers). They will continue to pop when it is wet or dry; it just depends on the saturation of the spot. The main thing to consider is that most actives, particularly cubes, will present different when they are very wet, so ID may be a bit tricky at times if you are new to it. Pedro99 Posted February 27, 2020 Awesome! I spotted a bunch but for whatever reason, I never find them in low lying areas, always on slopes and usually more to the top of them. It must be the spot I go to, there's been thousands of pans down where it's real soggy but never a single cube in such a large area until I walk up the hill (which is quite small so I don't find a huge amount). 1 Share this post Link to post Share on other sites

Are there trees on the slopes that offer any shade? I am beginning to believe there are certain species of grass that foster better mycelial growth and hence fruiting? Spok Posted February 27, 2020 Great day for a ride ! I went out after a hot cuppa and ran into 4 other likeminded nature lovers which was cool . Normally I would ride through the paddocks hunting but because I was in such a good mood thanks to that cuppa ( and passed a 3 mtr python cross the track ) I decided to ride out to one of the local dams and back . On the way back I was chased by a big thunder head and of course boom ! One then two then 3 so I stuffed my pockets for a sunny day good fun indeed . PS please be aware of the snakes out I have had one 3 mtr python and even a goanna out sunning himself and the guys I saw didn’t have long pants or even long socks from what I remember today. Good opportunity to try and get some morphological markers for the cubensis and subcubensis, which apparently are identical apart from spores. There were quite a few trees down in the lowest soggy regions so, at least for that area, you need to get a little higher. I did that today and went through a fence nearby and was shocked to find them everywhere. They certainly seem to love the shade, and the combination of high shade (trees) and low shade (grass). Great point about grass types I might get some pics of common paddock grasses ready for next time so I can identify them and see if there's a pattern.
