Bunnings tricho ID help please?

Question

Picked up these two little fellows at bunnings - first one labelled as "peruvian torch" - supplier is hamiltons. It doesnt look particularly like a peruvianus to me, and I mistrust their labelling a bit as I bought another one labelled the same which I am pretty sure is a terscheckii...

Any guesses? I know it's hard to say based on a juvenile form... Pach? Scop? Peruvianus? Something else?

From the top.

Second one looks much more like a peruvianus to me, unlabelled, supplier is collectors corner (paradisia). Smurf blue colour and golden spines. Beautiful cactus whatever it is anyway. If anyone else thinks it is very likely a peruvianus, I might pick up another one. There was a bigger one, but it had a few wounds and I suspect had beginnings of rot...

Thanks for your opinions.

There were some Mrytillocactus Geometrizans and they looked nothing like either of these.

Oh and first one is definitely not a Terscheckii! ;) From the thumbnail I was sure it´s Myrtillocactus but the close-up made me doubt it. I rarely see very small Myrtillocacti so it could very well be a Geometrizans but I wasn't able to fully rule out peruvianus either.

First one is not Tersheckii or Myrtillocactus geometrizans IMO.

It looks similar to a Peruvian, so it wouldnt shock me if its a peru x ?

Yeah, the more i look at it, the more i think it´s one of these Peruvianus with the big felted Areoles. If it´s the one i think, it becomes a Massive Chunk of a Peruvianus!

EG, I should have been more specific - here is a photo of the one I bought which was labelled exactly the same "peruvian torch" but I suspect is terscheckii...

If number one becomes a massive log, I'll go get another! Worth a punt for a measly $7...

Hi Glaukus, alright got that wrong. That indeed is a Terscheckii or a Pasacana.

First one is probably really a Peruvianus but i definitely see why Prier thought it´s a Myrtillocactus. On the thumbnail, it looks like the spitting image of one. It was my very first impression too, and even with the close-up I was very, very uncertain at first.

If you want to know 100% sure, make a sharp closeup of the Areoles. Then we should know for sure.

Yeah, the first is M. Geo. The top down shot is definitely the giver. Trichocereus seedlings aren't nearly so angular.

The first looks like a myrtillocactus to me as well. At the same time it looks kind of like a trichocereus, but like MSSmith said it's very angular unlike trich seedlings.

Whenever somebody posts an ID question, I try to make my guess and then scroll down to see what the consensus is. I'm getting pretty good at it, though I can never remember the scientific names :)

With these plants, I also guessed Myrtillocactus and Pilosocereus. And I'll risk being wrong by maintaining that the first one is in fact a Myrtillo.

I disagree with the "myrtillocatus geometrizans".

Would you agree that it's not a Trichocereus?

I was gonna say I think its possibly a steno or maybe polaskia but im pretty sure theres an occasional tricho

seedling that looks similar for a short time.. Im not ruling out myrtillo myself but it wouldn't be my first guess and

the spination really makes me lean to the peru camp as I have had a young 5 ribber look nearly but not all the way similar..

I can see it easily being possibly a steno or some other columnar plant

Hi Guys, i might be able to shed some light on this. When he posted the Thread, I asked Glaukus for another pic because i was all OCD because of the Plant. And he was so friendly to send me another closeup. Hope it´s ok for me to post it here. Copyright Owner is Glaukus! ;)

No problem.

I'm getting better at IDing random cacti I see around. I came across what I first thought was a big scopulicola in someone's front yard but only got a closer look and I've now called it for a stenocereus marginata, so I'll not bother knocking and asking for a cutting.

That other one is possibly a pasacana. There's been a few of them floating around in recent years. They are one of my favorite species for sure.

Would you agree that it's not a Trichocereus?

I am pretty sure its not Myrtillocactus, or at least not a geomewtrizans or cochal. I mean look at the areole, the spines, even epidermis colour. No way. Btw I have seen and grown lots of this from seedlings.

This having been said, I am not sure its not a tricho, but indeed its a bit too angular for a tricho. But yeah it could be as it could be some other columnar like a Steno?

PS: new The photo doesn't help much as it doesn't give much detail on the areoles. but it resembles myrti more in close up I have to admit, black central spine and 4-5 radials, but still the areole is too fluffy for what seems a smallish/seedling cactus.
