-RC- Posted January 15, 2014 Don't get me started on this. My whole website is devoted to the comparison of harms caused by alcohol when compared to those by cannabis. This article is pretty pertinent to this issue, imo. http://www.responsiblechoice.com.au/uncategorized/alcohol-is-lethal/
gtarman Posted January 15, 2014 (edited) Why is it a necessary cause? EDIT: maybe overpopulation. Still seems a bit harsh but. Edited January 15, 2014 by gtarman
bogfrog Posted January 15, 2014 Necessary cause to the death, so they wouldn't have died during that time period without the impact of alcohol.
gtarman Posted January 16, 2014 Ohh. Silly wording that is, sounds like a bureaucrat came up with it.
Anodyne Posted January 16, 2014 (edited) Why is it a necessary cause? "Necessary" in this context is used in the necessary vs. sufficient sense. If drinking alcohol were a "sufficient" condition here, then everyone who drank would be dead. To say that drinking was a necessary condition for their deaths just means that the deaths would not have occurred (in that time) without it, i.e. alcohol was "necessary" for those people to have died. Er.. so what Ceres said. Oh, and I think it was probably philosophers who came up with those terms, damned bureaucrats-of-the-mind.
