Cool. Its not just an unusually large vestigial leaf?

I've had a simmilar looking thing appear Mammilaria tezontal of mine. This weird pointed growth emerged at the crown and fused it up. It now has two crowns and heaps of pups now.

my first consideration was that it was a vestigial leaf, except I have always and only ever seen vestigial leaves grow from areoles.
it's definitely growing though, so time will tell! :-)

that is the closest example I've seen to it.

It's the fact that it is growing from the meristem that's so bizarre aye, seen a fahzillion vestigial leaves growing from areoles

its not that big

lol jwerta. that cactus must have to push that vestigial shlong around in a wagon!

update...

a pup is forming alongside the shoot.

^^^ I'm almost tempted to axe the pup once it's through more, to try and keep growth concentrating on "shooty" :-)

also, does anyone think this is likely a scop?

That looks like a pach to me. Almost looks like my PC pachanoi.

I doubt that little vegstigal leaf will grow anymore. Those things usually just dry up and die off in my experience. I would just let the pup grow if I were you.
