cactuscarl Posted October 17, 2013 Hi all has anyone else grown sso2 crosses? I put some down and as soon as I put then in the sun they turned purple which I know probably isn't that unusual but they stayed purple for months even while growing. They have since turned green but when its hot above the spines goes purple. I assumed it was just the seed I'd received but I also noticed it on the pup of a mature sso2 cross the other day so now I assume it's a trait of sso2. Has anyone else noticed that? Btw my seed was sso1 x sso2 which is an awesome cross they grew 2 to 3 times faster than any other seed I've ever grown. Share this post Link to post Share on other sites

bogfrog Posted October 18, 2013 (edited) I grew a lot of ss01 x ss02 and ss02 x bridgesii and they are awesome crosses indeed! Many of mine did the purple colouration as you said although I dont think its unique to ss02. .. Heres some pics of my 2.5 year old seedlings, they are just starting to look mighty fine. My biggest seed grown trichs .. bogfrog Posted October 18, 2013 SS02 is one of sacred succulents bridgesii clones - i found some nice pix a while back but cant seem to track them down again. I remember reading something years ago about the original SS01 clone being rescued from a defunct nursery and it was said to be (don't quote me on this) a semi prostrate form of peruvianus. nitrogen Posted October 18, 2013 Yea both are really attractive cacti.. As a peruvianus, SS01 isn't super distinct, but it is a looker - gets very blue with nice long spines. SS02 is very distinct in appearance for a bridgesii - Zelly has some awesome SS02 specimens he should post pics of - I was able to ID them right away when I saw them in person. I used to have an SS02 - here's a couple pics of it - I used "white oil" on it to kill some mealy bugs and this resulted in the thing breaking out all over in weeping black rot like I had never seen - so I reassigned it to another duty. SS02 x SS01 is a great cross - here's a couple pics of the two seedlings I have from the lot I sowed - they are growing together in the same pot - I whore pictures of this cross out at every opportunity because I'm so proud of/smitten with them: 9 Share this post Link to post Share on other sites
trucha Posted October 18, 2013 (edited) SS02 came from Ed & Mary Gay's former collection in southern California. (As did SS03) SS02 was a large plant that either lacked a label or more likely had overgrown its label. It most closely resembles the "aff. bridgesii" at the Huntington. There has always been a lot of trading in both directions between the Huntington and commercial growers in S. Cal so its a probable match (pending someone doing DNA work). An image of the original SS02 mother plant is in the San Pedro book. SS01 came without a label from a cactus garden in Sebastopol. Its not clear if it would be better called peruvianus or macrogonus. trucha Posted October 18, 2013 Use of 'dormant oil' or any oil sprays should be avoided on cactus species. nitrogen Posted October 19, 2013 (edited) Thanks! I'm a proud daddy what can I say.. Yes, the last two pics are both SS02 x SS01 (SS02 is the mother). It's the same two seedlings in the same pot - one I call "blonde" and one I call "brunette" (I'll give them each a better name if I propagate and distribute them) - The last pic is the same two seedlings, but 2-3 years later than the pic above it, the first SS02 x SS01 pic is the original two columns/seedlings - I cut both those columns back to make an enchanting incense, and so they then put out all the new columns you see in the last pic. nitrogen Posted October 23, 2013 (edited) Hhhmm, no, I can't really agree with that statement - that blonde SS02 x SS01 is more peruvianoid looking overall, and is much more thickly spined - like you can't really pick up a cutting of it without gloves on - and it's more of a lighter green with blueing whereas the psycho0 is a darker green with blueing.
