Found some gym purps south of Sydney last week. This patch was a good 5km from the last patch I found, no hosts were visable and the trees that had been cleared from the area include gums, wattles and banksias

Very nice find with the stump shrooms! Should have taken more pictures, they're all over it!

Another find today

Flammulina velutipes - Velvet Shank

More commonly known as the cultivated form and Japanese name ... Enokitake of just Enoki.

these ones were growing wild from a cut elm stump in Central Victoria.

so far I've seen it fruit from poplar, elm, sweet pittosporum and a few days ago,

a friend fond it growing from a black currant bush.

such a yummy little mushroom

Hedgehogs!

now you've made me jealous.

ive got prints of velvet shank ( enoki) I found earlier this season.

would you do a swap for some prints of the Hydnums?

there are some oaks nearby that may like to meet them.

near Eucs too, just in case the Aust ones are specific to Euc .

i haven't heard of any growing under oak in Aust., but I'd like to try it.

Zen Peddler sings their praises as one of the best edibles around..

The small, species with red caps we got here, H.rufescens is the euro species is indeed tasty and better f.e. than Cantharellus cibarius. But the larger white species (forget the name) can get bitter. So can other species, I hear..

I can do some prints. I will try and get thick prints for mass in innoculation. I have found on nearly every tree species locally. They don't seem too fussy about their host. Blue gums, marri, karri, acacia madenii, acacia obtusifolia, and many others. Messmate would be a good choice if available.

As for edibility. They are amazing! I cannot believe such a prolific shroom is so overlooked when it tastes this damn good! I don't like normal field/portabello types. I like enoki, oyster, etc. but these are just way better than any of those. I haven't tasted golden chants. So cannot comment. I have never found any bitter note. But none of mine generally get THAT big. I cannot really taste much diff between species. The chestnut brown ones are generally smaller, drier, firmer. Ones spot yields loads, but picking is a pain.

On 22 June 2016 at 9:33 PM, gerbil said:

I'd say both are from a fox, the kill and the scat. Difficult to ID on a good day, but cat's generally won't signpost with scats like that, open and elevated, whilst foxes and dogs will and often shit near where they kill.

Just wanted to share that I recently learned that the rabbit intestines were most likely left by a Powerful Owl. Apparently fairly common (also explains how they got into a rabbit proof yard (which I hadn't previously mentioned ,-)

I was in Darlington hills (WA) last weekend taking a walk with the family & found some almost invisible, well camouflaged mushrooms growing out of the red pea gravel dirt . with the compaction Im surprised they were able to grow out of the path. Don't know what they are, but pretty cool none the less.

forsooth what mighty fine subbies thouest hast me olde Aussers

.... today i was wondering.. whilst wandering through a golf course dodging balls and general peeps...

did i just find my first ever pantie caps [panthercaps] ? (in amongst a few russulas and other bits n bobs)

The suspected ammanita panthies were growing from oak , silver birch and one may have been on hawthorn (or a bigger oak root than i imagine)

what do you reckon? , hope theyre not just blushers (although if they are they'd be a personal first also and wouldnt be too bad a thing, then again i may have found both?)
