tripsis Posted September 30, 2013 Since a forum upgrade maybe 6 months or a year ago, the "View New Content" tab hasn't worked for me, instead yielding only "Sorry, no new content found.". If I'm not logged in, it works, but once logged in, there is never any new content. What's going on?
Jox Posted September 30, 2013 Hey mate, I have had a lot of little problems like that & it only seemed to happen when I was on this site & since the upgrade, I was sure it was something that was a problem here as after deleting my cookies/caches etc it was still playing up. I restored my computer to factory settings a couple of weeks ago & everything here has worked perfectly since. I have know idea what I am doing when it comes to computers & you probably know all the tricks so I doubt I can be much help . Good luck. Cheers Jox
tripsis Posted September 30, 2013 Damn, a full reformat seems a little drastic! Hopefully I can avoid doing that. I always find reformatting a mild nightmare.
mrpants Posted October 2, 2013 What browser and operating system do you use, tripsis? Like, Firefox on Windows 7, for example. You shouldn't need to reformat, you just need to narrow down what crap needs to be cleared out of where.
tripsis Posted October 3, 2013 Both those. Tried clearing the cache, cookies, etc. to no avail.
Sallubrious Posted October 3, 2013 That seems strange that clearing your cache and cookies didn't help. A system restore helped Jox, so perhaps if you are using windows the registry has stored some keys that are causing a conflict somewhere. If you don't monitor your registry (almost no-one does) then tracking down the keys in question would be nearly impossible. This possibly won't help but you never know - have you tried creating a new user account on your PC and then tried accessing this site through the new account. Sallubrious Posted October 4, 2013 Another off the wall suggestion that probably shouldn't help but might be a slim possibility. Have you deleted your LSO's or "super cookies". As far as I'm aware this site doesn't install them but if a third party has installed one it could be regenerating your deleted cookies. If it has been installed it wouldn't matter if you installed a different browser as it would still be active. If you install better privacy (firefox) as a plug in for your browser you should be able to manage the LSO's and at least eliminate that as a cause. https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/betterprivacy/
tripsis Posted October 4, 2013 Never even heard of 'super cookies'. I installed that add-on, but there was nothing for SAB in that list. I'll try clearing the registry. Cheers for your input Sally.
tripsis Posted October 4, 2013 Clearing the registry didn't help either.
Sallubrious Posted October 4, 2013 It wouldn't be a SAB cookie, it would be from somewhere else. You can safely delete all of them. & a registry cleaner probably won't do much unless you knew what key to look for, that suggestion was a only a very slim chance anyway. Did you try making another user account on your PC ?
tripsis Posted October 4, 2013 No, no changes from my end. It happened directly after an update and hasn't been working since.
tripsis Posted October 4, 2013 To reiterate, the function works when I'm not logged in, but once logged in, ceases to work.
Sallubrious Posted October 4, 2013 I suggested trying to access the forum from a new account on your PC to see if it made any difference. If the forum works on the new user account then you might get a few leads as to what (if any) settings are different. It would be a lot less painful than a complete re-install of windows. Even a system restore can be a real pain in the arse. Older versions of Firefox can cause problems with the latest incarnation of the IP board software too. tripsis Posted October 4, 2013 Tried a different account, different browser, same problem. I also have the newest version of Firefox. This has been happening through multiple Firefox upgrades now. I am very reluctant to do a restore or reformat. In fact, I probably wouldn't, attempt just to fix this issue, with no guarantee of it working.
Sallubrious Posted October 5, 2013 Sorry I couldn't help mate. It sounds like it could be an issue with your member data related to the setunreadconditions function possibly returning an incorrect value. Without access to the code I'm just guessing though. tripsis Posted October 5, 2013 No problem, thanks for all your input. Torsten...a little help here?
Torsten Posted October 5, 2013 I wish I could, sorry. if it works while not logged in then there must be a saved setting that causes the change. That could be on your computer [eg cookie, cache] or could be in your forum account preferences. Although I am not aware of any such preferences in the account settings [but maybe have a look around anyway]. I very much it is somethign I can fix from the server side because it seems to be a user setting. Just checking that you are using a current browser with latest updates. that fixes most problems. tripsis Posted October 5, 2013 I am using the a current browser and the latest version of it. This is happening on both Firefox and Chrome. I'll see if I can find something in my user settings.
tripsis Posted October 5, 2013 Fixed! Thanks for your help Sally and Torsten. Turns out it was a setting I had somehow selected on the forum. On the "New Content" page, down the bottom on the left hand column, there is a subtitle "Other" and I had "Just items I follow" selected. I unselected that and all the new content was starting back at me.
