Trichocereus fruits

Question

Interesting that a pc pachanoi fruit most closely resembles the woolliness of a bridgesii fruit and that a true pachanoi fruit such as 'kinmach' more closely resembles a peruvianus fruit....

Yup, that's something noticed a bit ago and one of the reasons why I've opined that the PC is closer in relationship to T. bridgesii than to the T. pachanoi/T. peruvianus of Ecuador and Peru. I bet your T. macrogonus and T. huanucoensis fit in better with the pach/peru than the PC/bridgesii.

Have you noticed any similarity between the fruit of the PC and T. scopulicola?

Absolutely Michael, spot on. Bud & flower development near identical, the scop being a miniature version of the pc. Both are producing new flowers right now, I'll post up some comparison pics.

I know when I have young thin PC's, they look alot like scops as they fatten at the tips.. I know thats circumstantial but the fact that there's so much similarity in the fruits certainly points to a possibility... also when they have less ribs they look more scop like

That Validus fruit sure looks weird... Is that how a terscheckii fruit looks? and is that just how they look when smallish vs mature fruits?

its interesting how the peruvianus is fairly wooly and the Juuls isn't so much... I hope to see a wide variety of Peruvianus Fruits to compare

with each other...

Nice idea for a thread

zelly, I'd love to hear your thoughts as well as others' about the similarities of the following plant from Cochabamba, Bolivia, with the PC, T. scopulicola, and T. bridgesii. Which one might you say it closest resembles?

Michael, when I first clicked the link my immediate thought was bridgesii, based solely on the flowers.

IMO the bridgesii flowers I've seen have all consistently exhibited predominately greenish sepals, turning lightly reddish brown at their tips. PC's & scop flowers show more of the reddish brown coloration.

The plant itself most closely resembles pc.

I have made a cross both ways between PC pach and scopulicola.

How do I tell when the fruits are ripe enough to eat/harvest the seeds.

Thanks !

unless you want to eat them...then wait 3 days or so after they crack so the sugar builds up...protect from birds & bats

when the fruits split open, it is harvest time

A few months ago I pollinated lots of flowers on different plants over the course of a week. All the fruits split open two months ago, except for the three fruits on one plant. Those fruits are still tightly sealed. Should I just leave them there until they split or fall off or can I cut them off? I'm hoping for viable seed. The fruits are on a terscheckii cutting that had been recently rooted.

Should I just leave them there until they split or fall off

thats what I'd do mate. let the plant do its own thing at the speed of its choosing.

and two months plus or minus a week or two sounds about right.

now here's a wild story:

Nitrogen brought over his seeds recently, well one fruit hadnt split yet & it was still attached to the stem. Turns out he had his plant growing in someones yard & it had to go, so he cut the main stem on it, At the time, all it has was a bud. So then he stuck the cutting in the corner & forgot about it, and the bud grew into a flower ! So then he pollinated it with some of his Lumberjack pollen from 2 recent flowers, and the cross took ! Meanwhile, the cutting never was rooted. So he brings me a 24" cutting thats somewhat dehydrated & has a nice fat fruit on it. By the looks of things it could split any day now, & I stuck the cutting in a pot of dry soil in the gh, where hopefully it will root out in the next few months.

His cutting is an SS02xPach 'Mel/vin' & the pollen donor is LJack.

Yeah, 'tis super hairy, you can see through the hairs to the green fruit skin better in person than you can in the pics.

From rocks to the tip it's 92cm.

It's in way too small of a pot also. I was planning on puttng this one in the ground early in spring but when I saw the flower bud I decided I'd wait till it was finished before I planted it out.

Psycho0 X Yowie fruit coming along. You can see the green skin more through the hair now as it's been rained on a few times and the hair is a bit slicked back.

Psycho0 x yowie! Awesome cross!! Nice work!

And the reverse, (Yowie X Psycho0), is coming along too! Although the fruit is smaller than the one on Psycho0 it has been there for the same amount of time, give or take a couple of days.

fuck yes got 3 on the spineless scop, i did pollinate one myself from PC but i think the bees beat me to it, other 2 are done by the bees, just from PC. theyve definitely taken.

and the fields pach is coming along nicely, with an extra fruit since last pic.

Gotta start sorting some seeds out! I could see this fruits shape had changed as I walked past it and sure enough it had split underneath. :)

Yowie X psycho0
