There's not much to it at the moment (which isn't surprising for a pre-alpha) but it has me very excited about what it will be like when it's 'done'. Plus, afaik, it's going to remain free, which is awesome.

If anyone is unaware of of what unreal engine 4 is capable of, download the paris apartment demo. Yeah, a fully fledged game is unlikely to look quite as good because it's not as easy to get away with baked lighting etc., but it's pretty damn impressive. Plus, the whole engine went free a couple of days ago, and then unity 5 was announced as free a day later. This means we're gonna see a crapton of indie games that are really nicely rendered in the upcoming months.

I finished the main quest and had done plenty of side quests along the way. I tried to keep playing after I finished the main quest but got pretty bored after a while. It was epic while the fun lasted though.

Incognito - if you ever get bored with Skyrim, have a look at Fallout 3. It's basically the same game but with lasers & mutants in place of the swords & dragons (actually no, you still get swords). Fallout 1 was supposedly inspired by Mad Max in some vague way - you certainly have those moments scrambling for your last shotgun shell, and there are an awful lot of enemies wearing mohawks & shinguards. Skyrim is pretty, but I found the lack of rocket-launchers & crazy robots disappointing.

...Fallout 3...

I thought I'd love Fallout, for the same reasons as you. I spent ages trying to decide between fallout 3 and new vegas. I bought NV, but I just couldn't get into it. I actually put quite a few hours into it too, but it just doesn't grab me. Far Cry 4 is much more what I was expecting from fallout NV in terms of enjoyment.

Another game to play if you like skyrim is Kingdoms of Amalur. In a lot of ways it's not as good as skyrim, but it's got really fun combat and a fairly big world with nice aesthetics. It's also very cheap, and you can play free for 48 hours before you buy it if you're on PC.

New Vegas didn't really grab me either - not sure why exactly, but it just wasn't as fun as F3. Too much social networking, too many railroads - don't we have enough of that crap in real life? I felt that they lost sight of the true purpose of Fallout: hitting giant scorpions with sledgehammers.

I'm too jaded now to give F3 a go

I'd possibly take a look if/when they make a new one. But I'm not entirely sure the whole post-apolcalyptic thing does it for me. I'm looking forward to TW3, because TW2 would have been better than skyrim if it was a big, open world, and that looks like what TW3 is going to be. Also psyched for Kingdom Come: Deliverance, which looks cool for its non-fantasy medieval setting; "dungeons and no dragons" as the lead dev (Vavra) describes it.

F3 was fun tho ballzac! that said bethesa are kinda mad sloppy with there texturing etc sad that the fan made add-ons esepcially graphics wise tore the ass outta the vanilla heh, new vegas was ok still shit texturing tho hahah. F4 looks tight graphics wise anyway no leaks on the story till release so hoping it aint shite which can be hard to tell with all the hype that surrounds triple A games these days... will most probably try it though.

Dues ex mankind divided looks like a fairly futurustic like take on the evolution of humankind, certainly a step away from the post apocalytic stuff that has been churned out in the past, could be a refreshing take given the differing options of game play style ie, stealth, combat, dialogue based rather than being forced into the usual linear path although apparently has been stated boss fights will mostly be the same regardless which is kinda meh, maybe still fun anyway hard to tell atm

Metro 2033 and last light redux are exceptionally well made survival horror/shooters if your into that kinda thing does take a decentish rig (pc) to run at with at least acceptable graphic quality ( which in reality is around the same price as the 8th gen consoles ie late 2012 onwards (ps4,xbox1), depending off course but even at the cheap end of the spectrum should be close to around the same if not better quality... but anyway :P)

Something i would make love to lately if i could is witcher 3. Pardon the french but fucking epic game the production values alone are... man mental orgasm just thinking about the amount of time and effort put into it, the voice credits alone are friggin amazing up there with GTA 5 easily in terms of the production efforts alone. Epic mad props to the DRM free install on multiple machines, expert quality free dlc/updates / news/ info regularly on bug fixes new content etc. is really how things like this should be done none of this pay per dlc BS! also so many pop culture references that are so nerdy you gotta love the shit haha star wars, moby dick, seven samurai etc, and some very interesting moral/ethical decisions. That all said my one big gripe being that the female characters besides a handful involved in the main quest and or as love interests seem to fall flat as characters outside of the set boundaries of love interest or main story. there are two main points that come to mind in which strong female leads challenge the patriarchy but seemingly comes to naught in terms of developing as individual character extrapolations albiet to push forward with main story le sigh lol. i dunno i just love me some strong independent kick ass women :)

did play dragon age inquistion on 360 was fun although not as compelling as witcher 3 dunno maybe will try it on pc with the dlc see if its any better

Have just finished "The Last of Us", one of the most epic games i've ever played, skyrim's another favorite.

For anyone that's in their 30's and remembers growing up on Double Dragon I strongly advise Double Dragon Neon. Absolutely hilarious, nostalgia gold!!!

I have dusted off my old xbox 360 and pased it on to the little one. So we have been playing Infinity 2.0 and skylanders swap force :-)

The makers of these games are switched on. Not only do you have to buy the game and portal. You then have to collect/buy upto 30 different figures to open different levels in the game.

Skylanders was a bit tedious to play and ended up costing a fortune. infinity 2.0 was fun to play because of the Avengers, shield, guardian of the galaxy and Disney figures and levels

I cant wait for infinity 3.0 star wars

Im sure disney will make back there billion dollar investment multiple times

I was a fan of Fallout3 until I realised I was spending half the game collecting junk to trade for weapon upgrades etc, but otherwise brilliant. Other noteworthy games Ive played through fairly recently include

Crysis3

FarCry3

Hitman Absolution

Wolfenstein New Order

Mass Effect1,2,3

Splinter Cell Blacklist

Battlefield3

Assasins Creed Black Flag

Tomb Raider2

and the winner is....

Mass Effect3 (right up until the really crappy ending)

Probably Witcher3, Skyrim or FarCry4 will be next.

What?! I thought that was one of its great virtues, the way it allowed me to indulge in my hoarding tendencies in a harmless virtual way. People get all hung up on the violence & sex in videogames, when what they should really be worried about is the way it encourages rampant hoarding. I don't care if my kids become machete-wielding porn addicts, but the idea that they might one day be crushed under a crapalanche of their own making, that saddens me. Kids, just say "no" to crafting games. You get all the best stuff off the corpses of your vanquished foes anyway.

Alfamiller - thanks for reminding me of Day of the Tentacle! Love those cheesy old adventure games, that was one of the best.

I'll second that sentiment. When my kids play minecraft it turns into an all in brawl. Fuck I hate that game.

They can play gtaV and be happy to take turns, but with minecraft they piss aech other off to no end and all hell breaks loose.

My daughter loves minecraft, to be honest I just can't get into it, but yeah she would play that game 24/7 if I let her. However I don't mind sneaking away and having a few pipes and coming back to my beanbag and crank the sound while she plays over surround sound. The music on mine craft is so relaxingly awesome! She loves red dead redemption as well but she freaks me out a little when she rides around killing cows, horses and hookers :/

There is an upcoming game called For Honour. It's basically a battle arena type game (so not much of a single player campaign) but it looks fun. Unfortunately it's only 4v4 from what I've heard so I can imagine it would get really boring/easy quickly just hacking up bots.

They need to bring the game Chivalry to next gen. I only ever played the demo of that game but there's youtube vids of massive battles between 20 or more players. Just far out carnage, ye olde medieval style.

Far out 4

The new Ghost recon

Mad Max

For Honour

Some of the games I'm looking forward to. Once I finish The Witcher 3 i'll start playing Diablo 3.

cheers

I'm a long time gamer. A lifer. I had the kind of parents that said 'here you go, here's a nintendo, a bag of skittles and three litres of coke. Knock yourself out kiddo, we're going drinking'.

Have played thousands of games over the years.

Here's my top 10 (in no particular order)

1. World of warcraft, vanilla to burning crusade). Probably the best time gaming I've ever had. It was the kind of time that makes me feel sorry for gamers who weren't there for it, because I feel they'll never know how truly immersive, and personal gaming can truly be. This is before cross-server pvp; you had real friends, and real enemies in game back then. It was personal. I have never encountered another game with the level of community of early wow, and truthfully, I don't think we'll ever see the like again. If pushed, I would have to say that the original wow and burning crusade, are probably the best video games ever made.

2.Fallout franchise--what can I say? I fucking love the post-apocayptic tesla-powered alternate universe of fallout. The games themselves are as glitchy as hell, but my god, they are so inventive, so well thought out, creative, beautiful and funny. Massive fanboy. Fallout 4 is fucking great, too--the series hasn't gone the way of other big release titles and has kept its integrity.

3. Dark souls franchise--probably the most frustrating but rewarding game I've played after warcraft. Highly recommended.

4. Call of duty, modern warfares 2-3--I had a blast on these, before microtransactions and a failure to evolve made the series stagnate. I was top 3000 in the world for kills in mw2, had over 100 nukes, and nuked on the map rust several times (fans of the series will know how hard that was lol).

5.Half-life 2--an amazingly realized game that is criminally underrated, and is perhaps the best gaming sequel ever made. I have never been able to understand why the half life series isn't a huge deal the way fallout is. If you've never played half life, get it.

6. Doom 2--back in the days of pentiums, this game used to scare the shit out me. Peeling through those dark hallways listening to monsters breathe somewhere in the darkness, not knowing whether or not a minotaur with rocket launchers for fists lurked behind door number three--yeah. Good times.

Battlefield series--great massive scale shooters, great pvp.

7. Kings bounty (sega megadrive 2) This game really kept me engrossed as a kid. The graphics were terrible, it was hard to navigate, but yeah--It really kept me plugged in.

8.Tony Hawk series--great fun.

9.silent hill series--very creepy. The gold standard in horror suspense gaming.

10.Halo--had hundreds of great splitscreen matches here.

Top 5 rpgs?

I'd have to have a Final Fantasy in there, with Oblivion and maybe a Dragon Age as well.

Fuck it's been ages since I played anything, which is interesting because I was raised similar to starling, in that I had every gaming platform from Commodore 64 up.

Top 5 fps?

Half Life's'

Quakes

CoDs up to MW

Dooms, except for one of the last ones

Battlefields

First few Far Crys

Crysis was good too

How many was that?

Legend of Zelda could have made the list, yeah. So many titles could. Shinobi, golden axe, baldurs gate, TES.,mario cart....it's almost impossible to whittle it down to ten.

Responsible choice also has some titles I very nearly included, quake especially.

I still game pretty heavily. I think the best game made in the last few years is final fantasy XIV A realm reborn. It's the best functioning mmorpg ever made, but isn't really my thing as graphically it's a bit too Asian for me.

Best non-mmo I've played recently would be Alien Isolation. The only Alien franchise game I've ever enjoyed, and very suspenseful and terrifying generally. I have no idea how it tanked so badly in the reviews on gamespot etc, it's a fucking great game.

I wish I'd had the money to buy shares in activision before they exploded, I would have in a heartbeat.

It's kind of like when I was in primary school, I can remember my teacher talking to my old man about this thing called the internet and how he'd bought a whole bunch of shares in this little search engine company called 'Google'....

I wonder if he held on to them, and is living on a private island in fiji right now.

I hope so. I was a right little fucker to deal with as was most of my class. I hope he found some happiness somehow.
