Unpasteurised oyster grow

Recommended Posts

Hey all,

Just wanted to share some success on a little side-project I've been working on.

Lime-pasteurisation has been around for ages but i've never had great success with it until recently.

Materials needed:

  • shredded straw or sugar cane bagasse
  • high calcium hydrated lime (very important that it has minimal magnesium in it)
  • Oyster Spawn (I've used grain spawn successfully) Could also use other aggressive straw fruiting species but I haven't trialled it
  • Container to soak the straw in

Steps:

  1. Fill your tank up with the least amount of lime-water needed to cover your straw
  2. 400g of lime to approximately 200L of water (I tend to use a bit more than this but it settles at the bottom so it's overkill!) You're aiming for a PH of 13-14 so get a PH pen if you do it regularly. Takes the guess-work out of it.
  3. I pack my straw into those "tough bags" with holes punched in them and submerge them under water for 18h
  4. Remove the bags after soak time and let excess water drain away
  5. Use a higher than average inoculation rate I aim for 7-10% (work back from there till you hit the sweet spot...it's always better to start with a success first!)
  6. Incubate and fruit!

I've had a few contam free grows with my main oyster strain...

I've also read up that a number of other species can be grown this way...pioppino, certain shiitake strains, king oyster etc..

Here's a pic of a lime pasteurised grow style..

Can you send me a plate of the strain you used . As I have a strain very similar but

that one looks like it eats trich for breakfast

Just wanted to share some success on a little side-project I've been working on.

Lime-pasteurisation has been around for ages but i've never had great success with it until recently.

Lime 'pasteurisation' is a great tek and it works well for bleach too. Have tried both from the instructions on this page and have been extraordinarily impressed with the outcomes

Low Cost / Low Tech Lime Methods to Grow Mushroom - Aloha Medicinals Mushroom Culture Bank

One thing I'm wondering tho, what's the pH of the spawn when it's ready to discard/ exhausted? I love using old spent spawn on my gardens, but i'm wondering how repeatedly placing substrate with a possible pH of 13 will affect my soil pH

Anyone got a clue on this right now? I'll be opening some bags up in the next week or two and can test it then

Same protocol as for soil. Mill 1 part exhausted spawn to powder, add 5 parts 'ironing and battery grade' water from the supermarket, keep on stirplate while pH is measured

I'd love to hear the results from this one...

I've read that the mycelium will reduce the alkalinity of the substrate...brings it down to around neutral, but haven't ever tested it to be sure.
