They're finally in the ground - with a whole heap of my first ever batch of compost. A proud moment :) My shadow even showed up and took a few photos :)

I need to keep busy and cheery at the moment so I thought I might post a sunflower update - this is my biggest one at the moment, a little under 40cm now, planted on September 1st:

Nice work gtarman.... looking good

Ive decided to put in a late entry, i didnt have the space for pumpkins but i still wanted to be part of the fun

Most of my seed came from a Sunflower i grew last year, and i purchased a pack of giant sunflower from bunnings just in case my genetics werent the best

were you feeding it any specific fertilisers? I was reading a bit about giant sunflowers, apparently they can be tricky thing to get big. High nitrogen all the way and a lot of water.

Why do you have to be such a kick-ass horticulturalist Stillman,

you make the rest of us look bad in these SAB comps.

The thing had pretty much all the nitrogen and water you could poke a three-pronged stick at. Grew it in a nice settled mix of poo and regular soil, gave it Go-Go juice and Seasol as well. Plus a good watering daily. I'm 99.9 percent sure that I got shafted by a shady ebay seller (twice now - the ones I sowed out for the competition were from a different vendor to my other ones as I'd run out after the giveaway). I think they even used some of the same pictures. So I'm gonna shift that and say 100% sure. But I should stop talking or I'm just going to get angrier and angrier until I break something.

Whatever happened to decent, honest people?!

I have some seeds if you want to put some more down, I can't guarantee that they will grow super tall. But they came from a reputable supplier pm me and I will send you some on Monday. Ceres its not that I am a good gardener its just that I live in a place where things want to grow, I'm just putting them in the dirt.

Yeah he's probably out there now singing Icaros & blowing smoke from sacred herbs into them as he counts the the number of clockwise and anti clockwise stirs he puts into his secret biodynamic preparation that will feed those monsters on the next full moon.

Yeah mate, I'd be tempted to cull a few.

Maybe two or three from each row.

Nice one. My entry as I said is flowering short at 135 cm, not a giant...but there's a silver lining - apparently it's one of the multi-headed varieties. Don't know if you'll be able to see it from my crappy pic - but there are 14 separate flower heads coming off the one plant (not counting the main one at the top, so 15 really).

I think I may have just invented a new category and won it hahah!

post-7646-0-63019600-1383720870_thumb.jp

EDIT: I'll see how it turns out anyway...if anybody is keen for multi-headed seeds just let me know - I'm sure there'll be plenty.

Looking good Gtarman

I couldn't bring myself to pull out half of mine.... even though i planted to close

I figured if some of my Sun flowers saw me kill their brothers and sisters they would all probably get depressed and stop growing

So best just to keep pumping them full of love
