Stillman Posted December 15, 2013 New giant idea. Giant Corn or tall corn I think its a type of South American Maize. Just doing some research on it, not much online that I have found. Here's a pick of the seed.

coolname Posted December 16, 2013 stillman i would be in if there is a giant corn contest. i dont have enough room to grow a pumpkin but i think i have enough space to kick some ass in giant corn contest
Stillman Posted December 16, 2013 I currently don't have enough seeds to pass them around, but if I get these to germinate we can do one next year with the seeds I harvest. Pretty cool looking plants, there's a tonne massive south American varieties in the US that I would like to try. 25 foot corn...fark.
coolname Posted December 16, 2013 Hell yeah i had no idea that there are varieties that can get that tall. Apparently there is one type that can grow cobs up to two feet long aswell. Very cool
Eternal Frisson Posted December 17, 2013 Giant corn would be good fun I think. I quickly found this, it's a two part video. And for those with the space, could always try watermelon http://www.organicauthority.com/foodie-buzz/biggest-melons-on-earth.html Sorry to de-rail
bogfrog Posted December 17, 2013 Lone female bloom - I think it may have opened yesterday but was hammered with the heaviest rain we have had in months. No pollinatrix in sight. More waiting until we even set fruit. *sigh* The vine The vine + boggy for size reference I do like watching the spiralling tendrils creeping along, they provide me with enough interest to keep taking care of this slow and stubborn plant. Atleast it's really healthy. Just seems to be moving at snail's pace to spite me.
Stillman Posted December 17, 2013 They love heat when does it warm up where you are? It looks very healthy.
bogfrog Posted December 17, 2013 Never It's summer solstice in four days. We haven't had more than a couple days of sun in a row for weeks. But that's not too surprising. The local saying about the weather is "four seasons in a day" I'm hoping January will be my lucky charm.
waterboy 2.0 Posted December 17, 2013 I am only getting a few flowers, but the vine has gone off ....so the new flush of buds will get me going. I am thinking bit after xmas now for a set for a fruit. Still plenty of time , but its been a wet/cold start for sure If that mulch is deep Ceres it might pay to pull it back to expose the soil a bit to get a bit of heat into the ground. For shock and awe I am holding my next piccie until fri/sat....
gilligan Posted December 17, 2013 My female for smashed by slaters so it died. All Male flowers now, so I'm in same boat... :-( c'mon ya bastard, show us ya female bits!
Stillman Posted December 17, 2013 they will start coming in hit it with some blooming nutes as a foliar spray couple times a week Something higher in Potassium then nitrogen. I was looking at fertilisers today and I think that most things developed for Orchids would be gun for growing giant stuff. They are relatively cheap too.
Stillman Posted December 17, 2013 (edited) I found a product at Big W today for Orchids NPK of 25 8 10 for growing and another 15 8 25 for bloom. Keen to try these out as foliar sprays on the next pumpkin. Was just a powder product 500g packet 5g to 5 litres $7.50 Edited December 17, 2013 by Stillman
tipz Posted December 17, 2013 Do you use a penetrator when you foliar feed Stillman ?
waterboy 2.0 Posted December 17, 2013 yeah I am lacking flower growth on purpose with the fert regime....about to smash it bloom wise. I am close to the length I want for a pumpkin, just got to get the arranged union right. I may or may not be using a "penetrator"...lol . Can see the kelpmeal kick in now.....just love that shit
Stillman Posted December 17, 2013 I had to google what a penetrator was lol. The only thing I add is molasses to my nutrient mixes, just from what I have read online not sure what it does but the results have been good so far.
Stillman Posted December 17, 2013 Grow the vine as big as you can, this one would have been much bigger had I let the vine go to its full potential.
Bigred Posted December 18, 2013 (edited) Most super flower nutrients use molasses as there secret ingredient . cacti jihadist you can use a little dish washing liquid it will help foliage nutrients penetrate better Edited December 18, 2013 by Bigred
tipz Posted December 18, 2013 Got my seeds today Stillman. They will be in the ground by sundown. Thankyou
Justin Credible Posted December 19, 2013 Holy shit Stillman that thing is HUGE, cheers for the molasses recipe. Will post some pics tomozza
Stillman Posted December 19, 2013 60 days set the vine has pretty much given up. I had powdery mildew and I trimmed the vine too hard so limited the pumpkins potential. I think its around 250 to 270 kg. It just didn't go bang like they are supposed to in the last 15 days. My daughter who planted the seed and pollinated the flower in her throne.
