My 13 yr d nephew wants a tattoo of ariel from the little mermaid with her boobies out. I'm tempted to pay for it to be done and pose as his consenting parent. I worship the kid, even snoop dogg could only ever wish to be as naturally cool.

Mermaids are rubbish from an evolutionary perspective. They're slow, and don't really have built in weapons or defense mechanisms. Maybe they're so rare because they've all been eaten.

They are unlikely from an evolutionary perspective, but certainly not impossible.

Humans are slow, and don't have built in weapons or defense mechanisms. But we seem to be doing alright.

In fact, our biggest threat is probably ourselves.

Hey, here's an evolutionary hypothesis.

Mermaids and Neanderthals are two lines of a hominid group, many thousands of years old. They diverged when one group lived near the water (as in the Aquatic Ape theory) and eventually evolved into mermaids. The others continued to live on land. However, there was some cross-breeding between the two, and eventually a new group evolved - humans, who contain both the DNA of Neanderthals (known) and Mermaids (hitherto unknown). That's why we contain similarities between the two groups.

it's as close to impossible as you're likely to get. seeing as the evolutionary stream that eventually led to mammals diverged from fish over 400 millions years ago & homo sapiens has only been around for about 250,000 years.. i could go on.. but do i really need to? am i missing the joke here?

edit: i haven't seen that vid, so i probably missed the joke/humorous element to this thread & i'm just being a kill joy again?

Animals devolve, or re-evolve surprisingly frequently. It's a mistake to believe that evolution can't happen quickly, go along the same paths as other species, and the like. Mermaids look like humans, so are very likely to be more recent developments than the divergence between us and fish, and more recent than the divergence between land and sea based mammals. It's more likely a re-evolution to be able to live in water after the ability to live on land (see the Aquatic Ape hypothesis). Perhaps the tail isn't quite a tail as we have imagined it - it might be two long legs with flaps of skin and webs between the toes. If they are intelligent, the tail might even be a form of clothing rather than an actual body part. How the lungs handle water, though, is something I might be unable to answer.
