qualia Posted April 2, 2013 NELSON, Ga. -- The city council in a small north Georgia town voted Monday night to make gun ownership mandatory – unless you object. Council members in Nelson, a city of about 1,300 residents that's located 50 miles north of Atlanta, voted unanimously to approve the Family Protection Ordinance. The measure requires every head of household to own a gun and ammunition to "provide for the emergency management of the city" and to "provide for and protect the safety, security and general welfare of the city and its inhabitants." http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/04/01/nelson-georgia-family-protection-ordinance_n_2995657.html brilliant

at0m Posted April 2, 2013 The ordinance exempts convicted felons and those who suffer from certain physical or mental disabilities, as well as anyone who objects to gun ownership. The ordinance also doesn't include any penalty for those who don't comply. Councilman Duane Cronic, who sponsored the measure, said he knows the ordinance won't be enforced but he still believes it will make the town safer. Sooo... exactly nothing has changed. I think I may be missing the joke.
Himdumb Posted April 2, 2013 I saw this on the news last night. It is not the first Georgia city to do so. There is another town in Georgia, Kennesaw, which has had an equivalent law since 1982. Even with 'everyone' not owning a gun, just knowing that a majority of people have guns prevents crime, or at least makes people think twice. From wikipedia: Kennesaw crime rates are less than half of United States averages. Kennesaw crime statistics report an overall downward trend in crime based on data from 11 years with violent crime decreasing and property crime decreasing. In addition the number of violent crimes where a gun was involved decreased. We will see if the same holds true for Nelson, Ga...
