"Peri's Choice" (check out the crest mate) IMG_1660.JPG Euphrbia obesa. v. cristata IMG_1662.JPG Neobuxbaumia euphorbioides v. cristata I agree with nut, your Euphorbia obesa cristata is actually a Euphorbia valida. Nice plant btw ! Any ideas what is up with this Trich? tric a.jpg tric c.jpg tric b.jpg DB- I believe your cactus has a viral infection, just like one of mine. The growing tip isn't affected & the spotting occurs a few inches down from the new growth. Its in full sun & receives the exact same care neglect as the rest of my cacti. I think that crested obesa is actually a crested e.valida, anyone else ? I would kill for a crested obesa. Not quite crested, but I'm working on it...... Prier's E valida (from above) a true crested E obesa
prier Posted February 12, 2014 Um, I did label that plant incorrectly it's actually a E. meloformis crest.
djmattz0r Posted February 12, 2014 Is the virus eventually lethal to the cactus or just cosmetic spotting/scarring? Any way to cure them, or just let em grow ugly?
franky Posted February 12, 2014 If it is a virus you will have to cut back and remove any and all infected material straight into the green bin!
zelly Posted February 12, 2014 Is the virus eventually lethal to the cactus or just cosmetic spotting/scarring? Any way to cure them, or just let em grow ugly? not lethal, just cosmetically unappealing...doesnt seem to spread to nearby cacti, so it really doesn't bother me. I'm curious to see if it manifests in new pups...time will tell.
irabionist Posted February 12, 2014 (edited) So I recently visited Cok Grootscholten's cactus garden and holy hnnng, anyway he gave me some LOVELY presents Variegated Loph (it's only slightly light coloured in a patch on the side, but he was very sure it was variegated!) Cereus forbesii var. spiralis :)and an elongated cutting of a Clone A TBM :D which came from this, just to prove the Clone and a size comparison! also the Myrtillocactus geometrizans crest grows normal for around 20-30cm then crests. AZS Posted February 13, 2014 DB- I believe your cactus has a viral infection... I'd like to share a revelation that I've had.... Do you know what it is? A virus. Human beings are a disease, a cancer of this planet. You are a plague...and we are the cure.
mutant Posted February 13, 2014 (edited) I agree with seeminlgy a virus in DB cactus and I agree it doesn't seem to spread, only cosmetic... but it seems to stay on the plant, unless you make a new plant from a clean cutting.. or at least that's what I have seen so far.. PS hey zelly is that a largish Obregonia in the background of this nice obesa? Edited February 13, 2014 by mutant
zelly Posted February 13, 2014 PS hey zelly is that a largish Obregonia in the background of this nice obesa? yes, good eye mutant whats really trippy about the obesa is it must have dropped a seed into a nearby pot with a loph in it. I watched this little tiny seedling start to grow in the pot, right next to the loph. I initially thought it was a weed or something. I just let it grow. When it was the size of a pea I still had no clue what it was, but it sure wasnt a loph. When it got to the size of a grape, it finally dawned on me it was a baby obesa !! So I guess I got E. obesa seeds, they're just so tiny I cant see them!
mutant Posted February 13, 2014 boy when I was begining I had 3 or 4 obesas at some point and they croseed and produced seeds for me - I dont remember them to be tiny. they were quite big actually... unless I am confusing them with other euphorbia which I doubt... hmmmmm
mutant Posted February 22, 2014 (edited) awesome fan shape (monvillea spegazzini monstrosa/crest) and promising columnar pachanoi from the crest/monstet strain I call kada (from kadakuda). I suppose even the more cresty forms, when big they might form a column to flower, but I dont really know. Nitro should know more about these I suppose ... All in all this is a candidate for me letting him grow, not cut and wait him flower ... Edited February 22, 2014 by mutant
Snowfella Posted February 25, 2014 Not a freak in any shape form or way but plain freaky in what it's doing.Been sitting without roots since the beginning of this month when the mother plant fell over and I had to chop it up. Had no buds when I selected this tip to be kept and now it's kicking them out bigtime.
Dreamwalker. Posted February 26, 2014 Not a freak in any shape form or way but plain freaky in what it's doing. Been sitting without roots since the beginning of this month when the mother plant fell over and I had to chop it up. Had no buds when I selected this tip to be kept and now it's kicking them out bigtime. I had something similar.....but the buds didn't mature...........just stayed small and turned black and dried out...............

hostilis Posted March 11, 2014 GUESS WHAT I FOUND!!?!?!? Variegated Lophophora diffusa x fricii. It's pink yellow white and green. It is 6 months old, I grew it from seed. I never noticed untill looking closely yesterday and noticed that the discoloration was in sploches and there was the normal green color inbetween the splotches of yellow white and pink. So i took out my pocket microscope (thanks to EG reccomending it to somebody else I got one) and noticed it was variegated. It's hard to tell in the photos, but it is variegated. I grafted it to a pereskiopsis since it wasn't growing very well. Here are the pictures.
