djmattz0r Posted December 8, 2013 (edited) A Semi-monstrose 4-winds bridgesii that loses a rib occasionally and grows in a spiral. Hoping to top it and propagate this growing season. edit: Not sure how to get the clickable thumbnail versions of the pictures. Apologies. zelly Posted December 8, 2013 A Semi-monstrose 4-winds bridgesii that loses a rib occasionally and grows in a spiral. Hoping to top it and propagate this growing season. Please do not cut or top this plant. Let it grow naturally on its own & up size the pot if you cannot plant it in the ground. If you want pups, BAP one or two aeroles at the base, but for gawd sakes let the plant grow!
hostilis Posted December 9, 2013 I agree with zelly here. BAP cream would be the best option for you so you don't have to top it. In my experience when I've topped 4 winds bridgesii the pups turned out to be 5 or 6 ribbed for a while and sometimes revert back to 4 winds.
djmattz0r Posted December 12, 2013 @Sabry, Thanks! @zelly and hostilis: Okay, I won't cut the beauty I sometimes get ideas that may not be the best, haha. I even have BAP I just don't use it much. I was going to plant the top in the ground and hope for low rib counts on the new pups but I have experienced what you described hostilis with another semi-monstrose bridgesii clone I have. They were all 4-ribbed and only one of the three cacti are still 4-ribbed, these are different as they seem to add a rib or two randomly rather than subtracting. I will have to observe their growth habits more before drawing conclusions on their growth patterns. Here's a picture of the lonely 4-ribber:
Pie'oh'Pah Posted December 12, 2013 Awesome 4 winds!
mutant Posted December 12, 2013 Well I would probably cut it eventually even though it might not prove such a good idea, but I would wait lot more for it to grow before cutting
Philocacti Posted December 14, 2013 Here's my grafted melted wax, it's been grafted on stenocereus for 4 years now and it's over 1 meter

djmattz0r Posted December 14, 2013 Regarding BAP, has anyone ever experienced any sort of problems when using it? I have heard of it causing black rot spots on cacti but haven't experienced it myself but was the reason I never used it on any of my more rare cacti.
hostilis Posted December 15, 2013 I've never gotten rot. I always sterilize whatever I use to poke a cactus.
myco Posted December 15, 2013 I've never had problems with rot when using BAP The first time I tried I used the wrong kind of lanolin oil it was literally like watery oil that wasn't such a great idea it ran all over a bunch of stuff but even then it still never caused any problems with rot They didn't look to pretty afterwards but you get that One astrophytum got covered in it and looked like it was gonna get rot for a while then it just suddenly burst out about 20 pups I wouldn't be worried about it I've got nuthin but good to say about BAP it's amazing stuff
djmattz0r Posted December 15, 2013 Applied some to the semi-monstrose 4-winds on a few of the bottom aeroles and a few other of my trichos while I was at it since they were inside. I don't expect anything for awhile since they are going dormant but how long does it normally take for it to work and produce pupping(if it is going to at all)? Thanks for the help everyone
mutant Posted December 15, 2013 I have never used BAP apart from any toxicity for people , I really dont like the idea, and I can't really imagine how baping trichocerei would speed up the growth of propagation rate. I am quite sure that using bap to induce pups will reduce the speed dramatically. I have never found no situation that I should use BAP. Especially trichocerei. well, this clone doesn't pup, I hear you saying... okey then meybe there's some merit in bapping, insome plant that refuses to pup.... but wouldn't cutting the top induce normal pupping at the cup top ? and this without reducing the growth speed? hostilis Posted December 15, 2013 (edited) Here's my big bad melted wax buddy. He's 3" wide and 26" tall. Not nearly as big as yours philocacti, but a monster none the less. Edited December 15, 2013 by hostilis
mystical oyster Posted December 16, 2013 Apologies to be a noob but do you find there is something special about 4 ribbed plants? I've always had an interest in them, picked up a possible scop from bunnings ages ago and it throws 4 ribbed pups always, every time i cut a pup the mother throws another, probably taken 5 or so 4 ribbed pups from it. Ill get some photos up when i get a chance
Pie'oh'Pah Posted December 16, 2013 Morning Oyster See a quote below about 4 ribbed Cactus: The one they most commonly use is a seven-ribbed cactus. The rarest and most revered one, has four ribs. This is the sacred cactus of the Four Winds, the San Pedro of the cuatro vientos.
mystical oyster Posted December 16, 2013 Thanks donnie! That's cool, so does that stand for all varieties of trich? If anyone is keen for a 4 ribbed (possible scop?) i am very keen on acquiring a crest, and would talk about a trade. Pm if interested ill get some photos of mine up later in the week
Philocacti Posted December 16, 2013 Hostilis: yours is impressive ;) on it own roots, mine is grafted to steno which is a super grafting stock in my book. Here's a grafted lopho (to pereskiopsis) that got it's growing tip split and it turned to a 2 headed specimen
hostilis Posted December 16, 2013 That's pretty awesome philocacti! I love it when damage turns into something cool like this. I would love to get more stenocereus. I have one small one right now that I'm letting grow out to further propagate into grafting stock.
mutant Posted December 16, 2013 Hey, I am supposed to have also a clone of melted wax, but also one or two clones from "lotusland" , also a semi-monstrosa bridgesii, but I lost the tags and now I dont know which is which. Does anyone have both side by side? also noone commented on this: http://www.shaman-australis.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=35188&page=12#entry445962 you think its a true variegata?
hostilis Posted December 16, 2013 (edited) For sure mutant! Left is semi monstrose and right is melted wax. The semi monstrose usually just plays with ribs and the melted wax has lumpy bumps on it almost like a melted candle. Hence the name "melted wax" And BTW, those look variegated to me, but I'm not sure how to even tell if it's a "true" variegata. Here they are side by side. Here's some melted wax pictures. Here's my semi monstrose. Edited December 16, 2013 by hostilis

GoOnThen Posted December 21, 2013 wich ones do you mean by the lumpy looking ones are you talking about Tubrculate form (Clone C) ? i have 2 freds wich to me both look like the standard form Sorry I haven't answered you before. I have had soooooooooo much stuff going on this year. The clone A or standard form is the one that I haven't seen around much. Do you have one? I think the one I have and the one I see around a lot is the clone C. This is the bigger one of mine The pere grafts are starting to get going now The following are some of my Crest's showing the growth over 12 months Big stock this was only just rooted when the graft was done Cheers Got
