hostilis Posted October 25, 2013 Here's my Lophocereus schotii monstrose. Totem pole cactus.
mutant Posted October 25, 2013 Trichocereus cuzcoensis (came as pachanoi) KK2150 if I am not mistakening - it doesn't matter anywayz. Its a cuzco probably with unusually reddish/orange spines when it's growing. The "anus plant" monster that occured from it 3 times so far is not a 'viable' anus monster. The cactus regards the anus a terminated limb and pups - one occasion a clone went on with normal growth from an anus tip. And the new comers!
Prickles Posted October 26, 2013 T.Bridgesii Monstrose I've had this cactus for ~10 years and who knows how old it really is. It wasn't doing well in Albany (to cold/not enough sun?) I recently brought it up to Perth. Since then it's has been doing a lot better, really healthy at the moment with 2 new pups! Old picture just after i brought it up from Albany:
Kykeion Posted October 26, 2013 Is that a Eulychnia castanea crested spiral on the left there mutant? Nice score! I have been trying to track down an affordable spiral form for a while now. Trouble is they all seem to be in Europe
irabionist Posted October 27, 2013 I think I'm addicted to Schottii monstroses.... Crested Fred & Baby Schottii monstrose Lophocereus Schottii Monstrose forma mieckleyanus
mutant Posted October 27, 2013 Regarding the eulychnia yeah, I read all forms spirallis, monstrosa and crest occur from the same clone. They are generally expensive, I paid 30 euros for this. I am also waiting a bigger one.
Stillman Posted October 28, 2013 (edited) here's an update on the (sso2 x sso1)x (sso2 x sso1) seedling. Heavily variegated still looking to be monstrose in some way. This seedling never had a singular growth point. Its a very slow grower kind of driving me crazy because the bigger it gets the more yellow its becoming. EthnoGuy85 Posted October 28, 2013 That's insane Stillman! How long has it been grafted? And did you get a lot of mutations from that cross?
Stillman Posted October 28, 2013 been grafted a few months I have the date written down but not here. There is a bit of weirdness in this cross a fair bit of variegation in this particular seed batch, still a little small to tell if there is a lot of monstrose growth. I haven't really checked on them for a while will have a look today.
turtle_hermit Posted November 7, 2013 (edited) Stillman, that graft is wicked looking can't wait to see how it grows up. Edited November 7, 2013 by turtle_hermit

Swiper Posted November 9, 2013 A strange LW seedling pupping already ( top right in pic ) just over 1 year old.
Mitchell101 Posted November 9, 2013 One of my LW seedling which is also just over a year old is doing the exact same thing. Is yours in a closed environment or do you think an insect could have damaged the plant? I've got mine in a baggie although I'm too keen and open it regularly to check out how the seedlings are going (probably counter-intuitive as it could introduce spores or insects from outside). Jox Posted November 10, 2013 Hey guys, that is not too strange & can happen with young seedlings when there has been some damage to the growing point even damage like a bump or damage that can not be seen by the naked eye can cause this to happen. Another possibility is your willie is showing traits of caespitosa as some of my caespitosa seedlings do this but normally after a few months. I will not ramble on with things in this great Freaky thread but I only keep my loph seedlings covered for humidity/moist for a couple of months at the most. Cheers Jox

Could have been insect damage , but I haven't observed any other plant damage, I have other lophs and trichs in the same growing area.
lhb2444 Posted November 12, 2013 I've got this little loph graft that's been through the wars, it was smashed by mites first and then scale (which is persistent as ever for some reason) and then by mealy bugs but now its coming good and starting pup like crazy and one of the pups looks like it may be cresting to me. I've haven't raised any cacti that weren't crested before I got them so I'm not really sure, thoughts?
nitrogen Posted November 12, 2013 (edited) Here are a couple of mine that are going weird - these are hybrids from Oz so y'all are to blame for this Bruce x Sausage - that whole pot is Bruce x Sausage but this one is looking unusual - such a great cross - fastest growing hybrid I have encountered thus far.. These two are non-freakish Bruce x Sausage but they are so nice I have to show them off - the one on the left is my fastest grower and has serious attitude - to me it looks like an SS02 on steroids or something.. This is Super Pedro x J3 - the one in the foreground is a massive and increasingly horrific looking thing - dunno what's happening up top - looks weirder in person.. P1020090.jpg P1020092.jpg P1020094.jpg Hey lhb2444 I have had a couple of grafts put out growth similar to this, it seems that intensive damage can cause monstrose growth which sticks around for a while but eventually normalises again.. In saying that though, the two grafts that I'm thinking of in particular still look very strange, but I'd say its almost definitely an environmental effect not a sign of genetic tendencies. lhb2444 Posted November 13, 2013 Hey Ceres, I had a feeling it may be something along those lines and this poor little guy's definitely taken some extensive damage in his short life. Will be interesting to see how he progresses over the summer never the less

Environment can influence gene expression. I don't think any cristate or monstrose growth could happen without some underlying genetic mechanism.
