small cactus ID

Question

I found this interesting little guy at the warehouse the other day.

I thought it looked a bit special so i had to snap it up..for a whole $6.50

Initially i thought it must be a mammilaria, but i scoured through all the mammillarias on the Cactusart website and couldn't find anything that matched.

Wishfull thinking makes me suggest some bizzare ariocarpus species..lol but that is just wishful thinking

Lemme know what ya'll think

It looks like a slightly worse for wear Mammillaria "Arizona Snowcap"?

Or you can have a fossick through yourself, this should keep you amused for a few hours

I dont think its a snowcap as we have one and it looks very different.

This one has very long thin tubercules.

I never realised there were so many different mamms... looking through that website is like trying to find a needle in a haystack

i did have a giggle at this cute engrish quote though:

"Mammilllaria are one of the biggest cactus genera , all the picture have been taken in cultivation or in habitat by mammilllaria lovers ...and we hope this unique picture gallery will enjoy you!"

thanks snowfella for the suggestion of M. Schiedeana... it think you might be correct..

If it is then expect to find a massive taproot when you repot it, mine was well on it's way to split the pot it came in!

niceeeeeeee

M. plumosa is a nice guess, you could expose it to sun and it could prove it.

makes me wanna see the roots of mine too, I got two.

I am reading there are 2 forms, one is more clumper and easier in taking care, like the ones I got and this one you seem to have got, single headed are supposed to be more sensitive, and in a way this is true for all spherical cacti, and lophophora williamsi as well.
