These pupped very early I think peres may not be ideal for them as most of the big astro growers use dragon fruit or similar. I have some freaks amongst my Super Kabuto hybrids Not sure if this is due to the grafting of genetic this first one is really twisted, it doesn't seem to have a growth point at all. Its ugly lol. mutant Posted October 18, 2013 I remember having read that astro asterias are a hell to root, eve the experts have very slow and very low rates of rooting. I also remember having read astros might do this kind of strange shit if they are grafted to ver fast stock like pere. Stillman Posted October 18, 2013 The Japanese have a technique were they cut the tap root. and sit them in updside down pots until they root. GoOnThen Posted November 1, 2013 Thanks Mutant. I think they were all from a Mixed Jap hybrid seed from a guy in Hungary. He is cheap and I have had great germ rates with his seeds. mutant Posted November 1, 2013 (edited) ^^^ well I have too much stuff to sow to be buying more seed... fresh new grafts from some 8-10 days ago, they all seem to have taken. they are myrti crest on myrti (I had to redo one of those, and I bevelled them today, hope I dont mess them up because of this, it's still prettry dry and they're outside udner a cover) , lopho on selini, S.rauschii on selini, S.rauschii on tricho, lobivia mosntrosa on selini, I expect a high rate for them like 9/10 or something. Of note is I tried to do the root cutting (the lower part of the lobivias, but they did not take and those are yesterdays areole grafts, its 4x coryphantha and one myrti breast . they seem pretty nice , I got my hopes up. and last, outside graft, monvillea monster on large selini at my roof, I actually regard it as one of the prettiest PS: This is my own roots asterias with little spines, but mine is nudum... But the top is growing very well, I might leave them, see what happens and perhaps graft more cacti on the pups when they are big enough. It's one of my favourite cacti so I'm a little nervous about leaving the pups on but you are right, it will be interesting to see what happens, so I'll leave them, for now at least... You can also leave one or two on, let them grow, and then graft to them when they are big enough - basically you're making a graft tree at that point. You'll want to think carefully about space management in that case - pretty soon your scions will encroach on each other if you don't do it right - this happened to me, as seen in the pic below.
