@ nitrogen How do you get the spines (cant think of the proper name) on your pere's to get to huge?

I think it's just a lot of sunlight and dry air - cacti seem to put out gnarlier spines when they are in a lot of sunlight and when they are more stressed in general - its a coastal desert type climate here and I notice spines on my cacti tend to get pretty wicked..

I would rather the pereskiopsis have no spines and glauchids - I have to pick them out of my fingertips with the razorblade tip after a grafting session..

Those TPM x (SS02 x pachanoi) are bloody awesome nitro :) did they look the same as any normal seedling when you first grafted them or did you select the freaky looking ones?

Nah I just grafted them randomly - they all looked the same when I did - they were so young at the time.. Generally I pick the larger, healthier seedlings for grafting though..

Cool, that's all I have been doing to . This one here looked like it was a crest when it started growing after I grafted it but it looks like it has gone back to normal now :( it still looks a little strange compared to the others though . 5 out of my 8 tpm x (ss02 x pach) i grafted have put on new growth and I hit the other 3 that haven't done anything with some BAP tonight , hopefully it will give them a kick start :)

Mushrooman - it's hard to know what's in store with the TPM crosses - the motherplant will put out normal columns that grow several inches, and then at some point go totally weird/monstrose - so assuming that trait passes on, the seedlings could exhibit similar behavior..

Sweet I will be more than happy if it just does that :) do you know if the type of light the seedling grafts are grown under could have anything to do with crests or monstrose growth? I think I remember reading about it. Do you grow your seedling grafts under natural light or fluros?

If you guys remember on super bowl day I posted about this field goal graft
Well I noticed a few days ago the bridgesii showed up...

but look at the Pach! Gnarly Spines :D and 3 pups!
Supposed to be a plain old KK339... I have another of the same seed grafted
currently trying to acclimate to window sunlight but seems to have stalled and no pups :|

its maybe half the size of this one but started growing sooner...

I dunno If I wanna graft the pups or just let them be since they grew conveniently to one side eh

I would grab a big peruvianus spine and stab the meristem of the pups repeatedly  then sit back and hope for some mutant action.

Well this morning I have done a few more grafts B). ARIOCARPUS!!These aren't much to look at yet as they are tiny but it will be good to look back at theses photos in a month or two even better in a year or so. I will put the dates the seeds were sown & the date they were grafted above each photo, as you can see the Ariocarpus are very slow, these are around 6 months old!

Good stuff Jox

I have found they can be really slow grafted onto pere as well. I presume its because the vascular bundles were not alined perfectly. They would grow just very slow. My biggest one grew alright and now it has stalled so I think I am going to have to re graft it.

Are the seeds from Botanical archive? If they are how was the germ rate? I have a heap of their seed that I haven't put down yet so I am interested to know how they have performed.

Cheers

Got

Hey Got, they are from BA & I am a little disappointed with germination rates, the best I got from my Arios was about 50% some did not germinate at all .

This is the reason I decided to graft, I paid a lot for the seeds & even got some confiscated by CITES so my plain is to grow at least two of each one as a graft, at least that way I might be able to make my own fresh seed in the future. We will have to keep in touch about our BA seeds as we might need to do some pollen swapping in the future mate.

Cheers

I have found a lot of seeds can be a bit hit and miss that's why I don't normally buy small numbers at the moment. I normally like to put down at least 20 seeds so I have some hope of getting some up.

That being said I put down 100 mixed astros ( different supplier ) the other day and had most come up. I also put down a bag of 1000 mixed cacti seeds ( BA ) just out of interest to see what I would get and by the looks of it most of them have germinated :o but I will start a new thread with some pics about those. :)

Cheers

Got

Heres a good example of the varying levels of variegation in my Lobivia hybrid.

I would say 70% of seedlings are lacking some amount of chlorophyl some almost albino I have grafted the bulk so will be interesting to see if there is any correlation to the flower colour. Mother= lemon white

Father = purple/red.

Hey all,

Really enjoying this thread !

Some of my first attempts at grafting ........

LW graft 1 - sown 20th January 2012 - grafted 29th May 2012.

post-10629-0-38221500-1363591588_thumb.j

same plant 28th February this year. Grown under 15 hr days of CFL warm white. Roughly golf ball size.

post-10629-0-16686200-1363591924_thumb.j

LW graft 2 same dates as above, but grown in a small greenhouse underneath a verandah. 50% natural light. 1/2 the size of the above plant.

post-10629-0-15766100-1363592102_thumb.j

T.pachanoi KK2150 same dates as above and in the greenhouse also.
