Backyard ecology -post your pics!

Recommended Posts

It looked like it was carrying a fair bit of fat for hibernation.

I've built a few bat boxes before, not much to it really. Not sure if I got any pics, made em a while back.

I like the sound of their clicking coming onto dark during the warmer months, and they smash mosquitoes.

A thick Hessian bag hanging might work,  or two if thin:wink:

Be good to the little bats, they are copping it hard across oz.

EDIT - handy link for microbat boxes:

gave the bees unrestricted (and very loud) shagging freedoms without interruption , in all ways but voyeurism :3 - they might've even been bee-flys actually come to think of it..

Pvc pipe (umm forearm size?) with some kind of textured wood/shadecloth scenario hanging from the bottom so they can grab with their claws and climb up into the nook.

Im not sure if its necessary to cap the top....  Maybe a partial cap?

Little bats are special, otherworldly critters.  The best thing you can do is give them somewhere to crash for the day!

Well, he's a part of the ecosystem...

Don't ask me why he chose to sit right on top of a very spiny ss01xss02, I can't imagine it's very comfortable.

Heatwave casualties from down on the block, a crazy 46 degrees Celsius!   (Wasn't sure whether to post these here or in the climate change thread).

These things were dropping out of the trees all day. I thought they were just cicadas until the next day when I started finding all these beautiful dead insects everywhere I looked.

Mostly Great carpenter bees, Peacock carpenter bees and Teddy Bear bees. Also some other hornets, phasmids katydids and cicadas . These are just the ones the ants hadn't already shredded. Some really important pollinators of rare plants here.

So sad...

Scary scary stuff bro - temps reached on the North Coast that I did not think physically possible until beyond about 2040.... Caused major rethink of living and gardening spaces and what can be done to mitigate such extremes.... Lots of shade and water will be needed in order to grow many spp. and to live comfortably....

Have attached a few shots taken around the backyard over the previous few months.

1 = Stephens Banded Snake

2 = Wompoo Fruit Dove (juvenile flew into window but came good)

3 = Golden Crowned Snake

4 = Giant Barred Frog.

First 2 are Vulnerable species and the fourth is Endangered

Peace

closest suggestion toward possible ingredients I can go off of is that the sauce tasted very close to authentic Jamaican jerk sauce , yet better

dnno what this little critter is , looks like a mayfly ,.. I assisted this one out the window which is probably best since it seemed to get aggressive during the process and I'm assuming it has some sort of stinger by the way it kept tryna stab me with it's arse and with that kind of attitude it's lucky it didn't get deaded

Cheers, a few nice caves to seek refuge during the nuclear zombie apocalypse LOL. We never even knew there were any when we bought the place, so they were a total surprise.

This one's my fave, the 'Anniversary Cave', with hand prints commemorating our one year wedding anniversary. Hoping to add some little pikinini hands there before too long.

A few last nature shots, cheers for all the likes :)

Wow, I just read that the little blue 'Forest Kingfisher' is in the subfamily  'Halcyoninae'!  -Mind blown....

Just a brown quail. This one was very tame and wouldn't leave us alone for some reason.

It was hiding out under the car when I took the first pic.

Here he is out in the open. It gave my wife a start as she had never seen a quail before LOL
