Stillman Posted May 27, 2013 Interesting to note the ones that split tasted better to me, so I am trying to cross the two in a hope of decreasing splitting and increase flavour?
Dreamwalker. Posted January 17, 2014 (edited) This post has been a really good read........(thanks Jox, Stillman & others).........mine are just flowering now...................I have about 1/2 doz different species ........mature stems...and probably about 20 or so good size stems........lots of them are clones and rather inconveniently they are flowering out of sink this year......so hopefully my pollen saving tec has worked ....(should know in a few days)....and I'll get fruits late winter...............last season I had only 3 stems from different species and they all flowered together............happily crossing........all the fruit split when ripe .really sweet taste...crisp texture.....hopefully the new stems will be a non splitters. I got a lot of new seedlings growing of various species Cereus aethiops, Cereus chalybaeus, Cereus hexagonus; Cereus hildmannianus and a horizontial growing variety from the beaches of Brazil Cereus pernambucensis (said to also produce sweet fruit). Also have some Monstrose, never flowered. last season keen to find some golden seed one day Edited January 13, 2015 by Dreamwalker.
Stillman Posted January 17, 2014 bats ate all my fruit this year... very disappointing.
Kykeion Posted January 17, 2014 I hope I can constructively contribute to this thread soon, though it will likely be at least a couple of years before I can. I have a Cereus aethiops x peruvianus monstrose cross as well as a peruvianus monstrose cutting from a flowering mother plant. AFAIK the former has not been proven to flower/fruit (mother plant has been aggressively propagated without being given a chance to reach full maturity), and the later is still in the process of rooting, so... time will tell I suppose.
Dreamwalker. Posted January 19, 2014 Shame about the bats......and I think I have it bad with pesky blackbirds taking my apples and pears....and pooping on the rest...................if they were flying foxes I guess a net wouldn't stop them either.................
Halcyon Daze Posted January 21, 2014 Hey HD how could I get in contact with the cereus lady? Sorry Stillman, I missed your comment. Here's a link to her dragonfuit page but she's also developing a lot of Cereus. http://www.aussiedragonfruit.com/Fruit.htm Her best ones are closely guarded but you may be able to hit her up for some fruits from which you could propagate your own. Dreamwalker. Posted January 10, 2015 (edited) Thought I'd post some of the 300 gifted (many thanks) "cereus monstrose x" seeds to seedlings........most of them grew ~60% show monstrose form...but I suspect the monstrose # will be lots less at maturity.............. red pot some CMx grafts on dragon grafting array.... a CMx graft on San p log & while posting in a fruit section....I tried eating this? today ...sweet, flavoursome, succulent juicy even...size of a large apricot....skin is smoooth,,,, I'm going to plant a huge bed of these...idea orchard food....thrives on drought & neglect..likes frost....my perfect fruiting companion....ideal permatcultural plant...if Only I knew what this day red flowering ...almost scentless plant was....(Echinopsis huascha?)....inter-specifically hybridised the flw with other's as they flowered ..from EG's red frich project to whatever...should get some interesting off-spring...
