What did you do in your sacred garden today?

Recommended Posts

I found an almost limitless source of excellent free compost today, so I loaded up and covered my front yard garden beds.

It's a shame I don't have a ute or trailer cos I can only take about 100kg at a time in my tiny hatchback.

Nature beat me in pollination again. (moonflower vine)

The one that i pollinated myself is growing too, but it's not quite as big as this one yet.

Corkscrew vine i found a flower bud on, with ant included. It and it's vine traversing friends will pollinate this one.

My leafy garden... lets see. Removed some seed from the fridge I had been soaking in water for the last few days. Planted that seed today so I'll have to keep my fingers crossed. Pruned back my Datura wrightiiwrightii.thumb.jpg.61b22c35cd6434db933c39b64fc01e7c.jpg I collected from the Mojave desert. Seed pods and anthers had already been removed. Made an incision into one of my hybrid seed pods IMG_1872.thumb.jpg.352c071fbcfbbcd11aac8d15f0e8ca87.jpg to check for maturation of seeds. Crossed a few more flowersdaturawrightiime.thumb.jpg.3178dd4b7e482ce6aa5f3215db295912.jpg. Removed all flower buds from all Datura plants to ensure no unplanned pregnancies occurred. Watered my Brugmansia "Fruit Salad" and my Brugmansia arborea. Tilled around borders of garden to help keep weeds out. And yes, I did a few grafts while I was out there as well.

oh wow, spring is comin!

feelin pretty rejoiced that seeds of carob and brug from blowng popped and are growing. lol, carob don't even like it ;/

I today converted another old fridge into a cuttings/clone chamber and promptly proceeded to plant out small tubs of lemon balm, tomato rainbow beefsteak mix, eggplant listada and tomato san marzano seeds. I looked on my window sill and found 2 courtii seedlings (folias)growing in some soil from an old pot that had stump of a maidenii in it.

Well, the cockatoos have shredded my Acacia trees and eaten all the seeds, but they dropped a nice carpet of branches and phyllodes. So they were put to use as mulch for my sub patch.

I collected a bag of obtusifolia seed yesterday, started 64 tubes today. A lot will go back for bush regeneration. The bark rippers are getting worse around my local area, so I'll be planting in a few hidden areas and they should spread back downhill and downstream over the next 10 years.

I also potted up a few brugs cuttings, did a lot of work tidying up and rearranged cacti in pots for summer.

Nice Frosted Pinks @Glaukus. That was probably my second Brugmansia ever purchased after I acquired Jamaican Yellow some decades ago. I see you have at least two different varieties as well so you can get some seed if you like

@Dicko I've done that as well before. Your mind is never as sharp as it was the second you decided on what to do. Never put off making those labels. A lesson we have all learned and some of us have learned repeatedly. In your case though... waiting is going to sort out your minor problem so no harm. I actually had someone, me thinks the neighbors kid, toss my plants outside and inside my green house thus making my labels a moot point. So, here I am learning another lesson.

Now for what I did in my garden today... I planted some Danish Flag poppies after tilling a bit.  I also picked a single Datura metel (hybrid) x Datura wrightii seed pod which to my pleasure had a total of 8 seeds which I am now drying. Not a bad start to the day to say the least.

@Dicko

@Inyan, do you have any tips for getting brugs to set seed? I've tried cross pollinating these two in the past with no luck. I'm in a brugmansia group outside here, I'll ask the same to the members.

I was one of the founding members of Brugmansia Growers International and some of my old hybrids are still being sold. So... I may have a few ideas to help you set seed with these two. However... those two are going to produce mostly whites if you breed them together. Which is okay if you want 200 whites for every 1 you may have in color.

@Glaukus There are a few tricks for setting seed with Brugmansia that are difficult. Number one, try to collect pollen at different times of the day over a period of time. Some cultivars just put out pollen that is not very fluffy or fertile, but you can still set seed with it nonetheless. Think of it as having a highly fertile pollen versus a pollen that is not very fertile. Some cultivars are also simply not easy to set seed on. Frost Pink can have very fertile fluffy pollen and she is pretty good at setting seeds when given a good pollen.

I always pollinate Brugmansia flowers for the first time before they exit the calyx. This means I have to take a razor blade or my fingers to open up the bloom and the calyx to pollinate the still immature pistil. The stigma is receptive long before the flower opens. Close the bloom back up and the natural humidity in the blossom should keep the stigma from drying out and causing your cross to fail.

Making a cross after a rain often helps as you will notice that often times the stigma will split open down the middle forming what looks like a "Y" or sometimes even recurved goat horns. This is when the stigma is especially receptive. It is okay to double pollinate at this time if you see that happen as well.

If your stigma is dry and you have tried to pollinate early before the bloom opens and you suspect it did not take or just want to be extra sure.... you can cut the style with a razor blade and apply your pollen lower down.

If your anthers are not giving up pollen or the pollen is not ready at the right time, but it is close... you can steal pollen from the anther by running a toothpick through the rib of the anthers. You will pick up some viable pollen if there is any that has not yet come to the surface.

You can also dry your pollen for a few hours and then place in the freezer for later use if you have a particularly good day where you find the pollen is especially light and fluffy.

Keep your Brugmansia well watered when trying to set seed. If they get too dry for even a short period of time they can drop buds and you can lose seed pods that might have started to form. This is especially important during the first few weeks of seed pod maturation.

With Brugmansia... like to like colors will give you a varying medley of differing shades of the same color. A sure fire way however to get whites is to breed two differing colors together when working with the warm group Brugmansia. If you wish to get a Brugmansia that shows signs of more than one color... you need to sow a great many seeds out 200+ of opposing color combinations. That kind of cross requires more work, but the payoff is nice if you get lucky.

If you wish to create a double flowered Brugmansia.... one of the parents must be double or you need a pure species aurea crossed to a pure species versicolor.
