grinners Posted September 25, 2014 First post Re-potted the Psychotria Viridis I received from SAB. He hasn't really done anything in the month I've had him, possibly a new baby leaf has started to come out the top. He is now in a bigger pot and inside a plastic box for humidity The soil he came in seems to stay very wet for a long time (ie: it is still virtually soggy after a week of no watering). I have been misting him twice daily. Questions: 1) Should I have re-potted him straight away after receiving him from SAB? I thought leaving a month to allow recovery from transport shock couldn't hurt? 2) When re-potted, should I have tried to remove some of the seemingly slow drying (slow draining?) soil that it came in to replace with a more free flowing soil? 3) I re-potted the original plant/soil in a seedling soil mix and added 30% perlite, is this a sufficient medium? Thanks for your time
LokStok Posted September 25, 2014 is that a cm or so of water sitting in the rectangular container that your pot is sitting in (pic #1)? hard to be sure from the photo, but if it is, get it out of there. This will cause your soil to be sodden. Without drainage the roots will rot!. If you have to sit it in something, put the pot up on a block or half brick so that the drainage hole are not submerged and able to ... drain.

It isn't actually much water, the pot/tub is on a slightly uneven surface, and I took the photo right after watering, so it has just run to that corner. I will take on your idea though and raise the pot slightly.

☽Ţ ҉ĥϋηϠ₡яღ☯ॐ€ðяئॐ♡Pϟiℓℴϟℴ Posted September 25, 2014 (edited) First post A] Welcome aboard!!! Re-potted the Psychotria Viridis I received from SAB. He hasn't really done anything in the month I've had him, possibly a new baby leaf has started to come out the top. He is now in a bigger pot and inside a plastic box for humidity The soil he came in seems to stay very wet for a long time (ie: it is still virtually soggy after a week of no watering). I have been misting him twice daily Questions: 1) Should I have re-potted him straight away after receiving him from SAB? I thought leaving a month to allow recovery from transport shock couldn't hurt? A] could have done either 2) When re-potted, should I have tried to remove some of the seemingly slow drying (slow draining?) soil that it came in to replace with a more free flowing soil? A] not particularly...... but so long as no root damage , I can't see why it would hurt if you had... ive damaged 2 roots or so in soil when transplanting from sphagnum and in my aeroponic pod, experimenting with cuttings; they need root trimming often so its possibly more of a biggy concerning main roots and how many there are 3) I re-potted the original plant/soil in a seedling soil mix and added 30% perlite, is this a sufficient medium? A] yes Thanks for your time A ]Always a pleasure ;) good luck, bliss wishes and happy growing ! -Horsey p.s. those super absorbant sponges are an excellent "wick" to soak up any unrequired floor water (if you expand to something less easy to empty at a later date) I dnno how cold it gets in victoria but theres some nice waterproof heatmats out for tropical critters -dartfrogs and the like, V.useful here in britain -only the ones with an inbuilt thermostat though! (or if you control it through an external thermostat) ....or else its firehazard Edited September 25, 2014 by ☽Ţ ҉ĥϋηϠ₡яღ☯ॐ€ðяئॐ♡Pϟiℓℴϟℴ

grinners Posted September 30, 2014 PV isn't looking great after re-potting and placing into a humidity tub. Whilst it's newish leaf (on top) still looks fine, 2 or 3 of its' older leaves have fallen off I suspect they were too far gone after placing it outside of a high humidity environment for too long, but hopefully it is just shedding the 'dead wood' to make way for new growth. If anybody is interested, I purchased two PV's at the same time, the one on the left was housed in normal household air and misted twice daily, the one on the right was housed in a humidity tub and misted twice daily. As you can see, they are quite different in development so far (I can't help but do these types of experiments!). They are now both in the humidity tub. On another note, I have noticed these white circles on one of them, and realised that they are Mealybugs... :@ Spent about 15 minutes earlier using a pin to get them off. Found about 7 of them. I will continue to try to be vigilant and remove them as I see them. (Advice?) I know it isn't ideal to have both these plants in the same container knowing that one of them has a bug but I'm hoping as long as the leaves/branches don't touch that the little things won't make the leap.
☽Ţ ҉ĥϋηϠ₡яღ☯ॐ€ðяئॐ♡Pϟiℓℴϟℴ Posted October 2, 2014 (edited) hoping the fact mine grow in 100% humidity (or thereabouts) all of the time ... may be the reason theyve not had scaley bugs but possibly just been lucky I did have an army of ants guarding them for a a month or so though... I wonder if garden sulphur / alcohol tek would be a good remedy , I can only speculate for now but it works wonders for the cacti and plants that are not enclosed ... I hope someone with more experience chimes in with some good advice for you today I sowed 4 Anadenanthera peregrina and bought some more aya blanca seeds , since those seed gods at WSS appear to have reloaded their stocks, so might as well while that species' time is the now eh? the turnera ulmifolia has responded well to pruning and more water than i was giving it when i thunk it was diffusa, yay ! removed the plastic chopsticks and old spray plunger I was using as plant supports for 2 tunkunaka and 2 muricata/aya-cabi-roxo trimmed some psychotrias (cartha and nervosa) , infact took all the stem cuttings off the nervosa , stuck em in the soil... trimmed an aya for the first time... the one i bought as a plant (cielo) seems to have been carrying some wierd -assed ....ummmm , something-or-other... the veins on the leaf started swelling and i thunk perhaps they would explode and infect my little darlings... so off they fucked... now its resprouting some very much prettier slender leaves, very shiny .... I pinched out the tips on the ayaroxos and the alicias added the poor voacanga africana back to the RFB (rainforestbx) since it seems to hate life above the aquarium ... the cane that was left has started to resprout already... overnight checked 2 pots for ayablanca and ayacaupuri but nu'un yet managed to find somebody with access to a female virola and advised on which seeds are best collected/redistributed for reforestation etc... (within 45m of the tree) and how to collect and store them as learned here... because they had dried seeds ... fingers crossed it should prove fruitful for at least one species of virola .... in the next few years... I made sure to say theres loads of us who want them , maybe it will be a go by the next harvest if it's too late for this year... definitely a patience thing ole virola.... ... yeah i mopped up all the condensation on the RFB as usual twice daily and staggered it's daily rain plan to every 3 days instead ... threw out an ophthalmocentra that made a comeback and then collapsed... just 2 left now , one looking very fkn healthy, the other looking ok ive been keeping them at 20C night time soil temps and as it pleases for daytime (26-28C) brugmansias finally flowered like fk! , very nice fragrance but i think i kinda like the datura fragrance for longer... very heady is the brug one, bit peachy at first - edit- but at night time the fragrance can definitely equal datura's allure *might add pics later Edited October 13, 2014 by ☽Ţ ҉ĥϋηϠ₡яღ☯ॐ€ðяئॐ♡Pϟiℓℴϟℴ

☽Ţ ҉ĥϋηϠ₡яღ☯ॐ€ðяئॐ♡Pϟiℓℴϟℴ Posted October 13, 2014 (edited) tidyed up the rfb a tad and low and behold the magick one! , 3 weeks n 3 days since sowing i think... i wonder if they'll reincarnate the 4 virola sebifera nuts in with em? wierd things happen with aya and the white one is for magick , - been itching for this moment !! and to see something sprout from the virola pot anyhoo .. wierdness (coolth).... last year 2 alicia anisopetala sprouted , then 2 more as the previous 2 died, then a few weeks later the dead two came back to life and the 2nd sproutings died ! ... so the alicias i have have already died once... which is kinda wierd (cool) if ya ask me ....and another 2 caupuri sprouted too Edited October 21, 2014 by ☽Ţ ҉ĥϋηϠ₡яღ☯ॐ€ðяئॐ♡Pϟiℓℴϟℴ
☽Ţ ҉ĥϋηϠ₡яღ☯ॐ€ðяئॐ♡Pϟiℓℴϟℴ Posted October 14, 2014 (edited) *still excited as yesterday* i decided to take more snaps of the halflings and noticed twins! x] relieved the blanca of it's shell carefully and finally(over the last 2 days) then i sat with them and contemplated renaming the conservatory from "the tropic of Horsia" to "casa blanca" since it's like .. a white house where the president of plants resides.. so yeah I started measuring, cutting and fitting some bubble wrap up , last year i used packaging from the cacti this year i have some fresh left over from the GH so set to work ... probably best to do the rest when I can be arsed I reckon Edited October 16, 2014 by ☽Ţ ҉ĥϋηϠ₡яღ☯ॐ€ðяئॐ♡Pϟiℓℴϟℴ

☽Ţ ҉ĥϋηϠ₡яღ☯ॐ€ðяئॐ♡Pϟiℓℴϟℴ Posted October 21, 2014 (edited) RAWW(ground shaking)WWRZ!!! yessss! :D today during regular rfb maintenance I discovered a second aya blanca germinate I can tell it's from the first sowings since its cropped up in a place where I recall sowing initially , I had sowed the second lot between them so must have been disturbed when I found the original first seed sprout , with this in mind, i disturbed the soil again... perhaps they like more air than most aya seeds/samaras.. Ive had the fan come on 6 times a day ... 5x 2-5 minute blasts and 1x 30 min blast ... hopefully this has thrown some new dimension into my current tropical skillset combined with 4 days of sponge mopping up condensation(removing water)/ 4 days of window squeedgee(letting it rain back down) I'm wondering how much the fan has caused cooling, as well as heat dispersion; by running air over condensation when its been there.. perhaps this was key in germinating the white aya? maybe they like it slightly cooler than the others? been 24Cmin-29Cmax daytime and 18-24 night... fan drops the temps by a degree if the suns not shining, if it is though ... it raises it by a few degrees- 6 degrees... perhaps its the springtails from an already established piece of "land" in the virola pot cleaning down the seed? I sowed some in plain john innes seed 'post closer to the heat to try and get an idea .. also I gave the rfb 3 days constant light, 1 day dark for the last few weeks to see if they were photosensitive and sowed some ontop of the soil and some beneath.. these both germinated during the dark day/night ;) {and the caupuri germinated in the full light days/nights} either way the white aya wouldnt germinate for me last year when alicia , muricata and tunkunaka did... after a day or so trying to filter through all the samaras online of as many malpighiaceae as I could ... i found a couple of families that arent banisteriopsis that this species samara/seed/winged fruit seems to resemble perhaps this is already a known species this white yage... more time at it will tell I guess ... *excited* ... watched the sun kiss the opthalmo and simplicifolia found it easier to release the seed from its case while small on this one...
