space cadet swami Posted January 1, 2013 U've inspired me TS....I've got a pedro sitting out on the bench, ready to go. The excitement level is building...the idea of cutting up my babies makes me very nervous...
inti Posted January 1, 2013 go for it space cadet ! great start to new year if it doesnt take first time just reslice a millimetre or two off each and re-try. space cadet swami Posted January 1, 2013 Ok...so I braved it & cut the head of my lil' willy girl .. She wasn't that pretty anyway, she'd had a bad dose of spider mite earlier on in the year. She is now sitting atop a pedro cutting, that had only this spring, started to grow...putting on about 8" (which will now be my next cutting, to establish for grafting stock.. ) .. Whoa, I'm getting dizzy .. . So, hopefully the old rootstock will re-shoot...I was very conscious to keep my cut up above the root top, even though the urge, was to go lower... .. . Here's a closer pic...I should have taken some befores, as well ... .. I'll take the net off in about a week & take a better pic then ... FYI - the yellow colour of the cactus flesh, is from the light, sulphur dusting, I carefully dusted on afterwards.
GoOnThen Posted January 1, 2013 Well you have taken it to another level Spacey I use ordinary stockings for my grafts and you have broken out the fishnets Cheers Got
space cadet swami Posted January 1, 2013 ^^^the mrs didn't have any, so the only thing I could find was this onion bag ... seems to work well
Sallubrious Posted January 1, 2013 Excellent work trichoshaman, A few of my recent grafts are going well but nothing like that. & Spacey there's no need to cut them close to the root, if you cut them a bit higher and leave a few areoles there's a better chance of having them re-shoot before they rot. If you don't leave any areoles they can't re-shoot.
inti Posted January 1, 2013 hey great work Space cadet ! nice graft..big cheers for braving it to make the cut. Good idea with the old fish nets/ onion bag thing ;P ... I have been just relying on gravity itself . I will try that method next time. planthelper & GOT ; glad i have inspired you guys today. Was a great day for it, Happy grafting ! keep some pics posted of your progress. + sallyD good luck with your grafts. do share pics if u have any. thnx all for the positive feedback. happy grafting
planthelper Posted January 2, 2013 first i got inspired, so i did cut some echinopsis right away. this pic shows, two of them, 24 h after slicing the tip, i tried to capture how the core of the pedro has sunk, but the pic is, not showing it well. cutting pedro, 24h earlier and than re cutting, gives better results! next step get some scion, so i cut off, pups from multy pupping lophs. i had planed to graft an older seedling aswell, but than could not, go ahead with it. i simply did not, manage to cut the poor creature, look, could you cut her? she looks so human (mandragora) like!! but as said, cutting high, might lead to the loph re shooting, and a smalle scion might take better, than a bigger one.... work done, i used stockings and big nuts, to hold the scion down.
space cadet swami Posted January 2, 2013 I notice that my pedro isn't fitting as neat under the willy as it was when the graft was 1st done yesterday. The willy is still plump as & I'm not too concerned at this early of a point...but I can see why you would give the root stock 24hrs to allow for that shrinkage. I tried to capture how the core of the pedro has sunk, but the pic is, not showing it well. cutting pedro, 24h earlier and than re cutting, gives better results! Gotta get me some pantyhose...
inti Posted January 2, 2013 Nice work planthelper ! thnx for sharing your tips and photos. Cutting the tip 24hrs prior and then re-cutting makes sense as my graft take stats were higher on second attempts. I will use that method from now on too. Gotta now get some pantyhose ! Good luck with your grafts
planthelper Posted January 3, 2013 Gotta get me some pantyhose... Gotta now get some pantyhose ! you are lucky, if you can send your wife, gf or tranny friend to buy them, i have to buy them myselfe in a small town, hehehe. i use stockings aswell to keep the bait, in place, when setting yabby traps... and for filtering/straining paint.
bogfrog Posted January 3, 2013 The nuts seem quite practical PH! I exclusively used pantyhose for my grafts during the first year, but lately i have just been using a piece of string weighted down by two rocks and it works very well. If you can find the right sort of rock, just balancing that on top works too. I always struggled to get the pantyhose pulled tightly over the graft without the button sliding around. You really need 3 hands to do that neatly, or a helper, but using the string and rocks i can graft all by myself!

Snowfella Posted January 3, 2013 I've been thinking about using a square of insectscreen combined with some of those outdoors clip on tablecloth weights you can find in any dollar shop.
