Well I think I have found a little Huernia?

I went for a walk the other day with my kids while staying at my mum's & noticed a big red Kalanchoe growing in a garden up the road, I went over to check it out & growing next to it was a heap of what I presume to be a Huernia spp, the best part is some of it was crested :P. It looked nearly dead, I waited until the owner got home a raced over to hit him up for a few cutting, he happily let me take some.

I can't wait to for it to get healthy & flower, I have looked at a few photos & think it might be Huernia longi but will need it to flower to be sure.

Anyone recognize it please tell me, here are some photos.

How do I tell when this seed-pod is ready to pick?

The part on the right has shrivelled a bit..

On a side note, has anyone raised any asclepiadaceae from seed before?

Yeah, staps, huernia, hoodia... They're straightforward to germinate with a pre-soak and good coarse river sand with a bit of potting mix. The biggest thing to be wary of is too much nitrogen - they can make do with bugger all, and too much can knock them over, especially when they're young.

Hey Boggy, nice work on the seed pods, I have never seen mine do this.

Did you have a few plants flowering at the same time or was this self-fertile? From what i have read about there seed pods is they should dry out then split open to release seeds that have a silken parachute. They are designed to get blown away in the wind, so you might want to put it some were safe or cover the pods up some how to catch the seeds. I have not planted seeds out before but I have raised them from tiny (skin as a toothpick) size seedlings & in my experience they grow quite quickly.

Good luck with them & keep us updated.

Cheers

I would love a few tips on growing these. I am sure they need some season manipulations.. like euphorbias do for that matter.

I have had awful thumb on these, only got one to flowering size, but managed to keep multiple specimens still alive, which I still dont know how to maintain to get them become big.

they need lots lights when do they like watering? I keep rotting them and re rooting....

any ideas?

less water then, we only water them when they have been really dry for a few days. In winter we don't water them.

thanks

I haven't been very good to them. Neglected is the right word I guess. When you have so many plants with different neds sometimes some plants get mistreated. Its inevitable for my gardening style. I should move them near more wet-sensitive plants, to also get more light to see how they respond. But they're no lithops, no?

I took a wee cutting from this monster when I was working at the nursery, it is powering along nicely!

Anyone know it??
