slice Posted December 11, 2012 (edited) I was looking for info about lumberjack and came across this : "JRL: Here is the origin of the super hero know as 'lumberjack" It never ceases to amaze me that my little joke has become common parlance in the ethnobot underground. I went out to this bill collectors office in Rancho Cordova, CA to give up some blood money. Leaving I saw a big Lumberjack building supply store. I was fairly new at growing cacti, I think I was still looking for my first peruvianus, I probably just had a few pachanois and maybe my first WOH which was sold as a peruvianus, but really looks nothing like one. I go out to the garden area and spot what looked to me like a pachanoi but with wicked big spines. It was in a large plastic pot , had several columns about 3 ft high. I think I paid about $45 for it. As I learned more, I saw that it appears to be a peruvianus/bridgessi cross. Like a fat bridg or a peruvianus with less spines per pad. It's a fast grower, but doesn't seem to grow as tall as a pachanoi. It flowers occasionally, and once I got it to cross with a pachanoi. Sometimes the new growth has a beautiful blue color that love. When I started trading it I gave it a fake latin name, "lumberjackius", which people soon shortened to "lumberjackus" and then "lumberjack" " This was extracted from here: http://www.spiritpla...pic=4202.5;wap2 EDITED BY MODERATOR. M S Smith Posted December 12, 2012 I'm a huge fan of this plant and would agree with it being a likely cross between T. pachanoi and T. bridgesii. Here's my Lumberjack... ~Michael~
nitrogen Posted December 12, 2012 Nice pic MS! One of my favorite varieties also - I'm guessing bridgessi/peruvianus hybrid too.. Here's a few of mine - different years and different conditions - first pic you can see the spirit in the plant ;)
Halcyon Daze Posted December 12, 2012 (edited) I want to be careful how I word this but I think I read somewhere that it became a little over-hyped due to the first few cuts being so thick and heavy per foot. ie each foot simply had a greater volume, a result of it being an older more mature mother plant with thicker stems. I've heard the same theory put forward for Eileen too. Younger cuts are obviously thinner and have less flesh per foot. That being said it is still a beautiful cactus and up there with the best. There were some awesome lumberjack crosses being sold very recently. I think there will be quite a few of these little fellas getting around in the not too distant future. nitrogen Posted December 12, 2012 That's interesting - I had not heard that about the thick cuts and over-hyping and so forth.. But I have heard very little actual info about the spirit of the plant in general - lack of data is what it amounts to.. I don't recall v. Lumberjackus ever being sold or traded en masse - here and there people have propagated it and sold/traded/gifted it - but there was never a large motherplant like Eileen - certainly never cuttings as thick as Ed's Eileen.. It is not particularly widespread in general either from what I understand.. If it is allowed to grow big enough though it looks like it would get thick - the new pups on my Lumberjackus are generally thicker than the new ones on my Eileen, and we saw how thick Eileen can get..
zelly Posted December 12, 2012 (edited) I'm a huge fan of this plant and would agree with it being a likely cross between T. pachanoi and T. bridgesii. I'm guessing bridgessi/peruvianus hybrid too.. The reason Ed's eileen is so massive is because its been allowed to reach full maturity by being planted in the ground. There is just absolutely no way any columnar cacti can reach its fullest attainable girth planted in a pot. Every one of the pot planted plants that were planted in the ground are now achieving much fatter girths as they get taller. The new pups that emerge are much fatter as well. EDITED BY EG! Evil Genius Posted December 12, 2012 (edited) Hi Guys, just wanted to mention that i will also edit or delete posts that hide potency discussions within weight data and such. I will leave the thread as it is for now but will take out everything weight related (including the stuff in the earlier posts) if the thread is going any more into that direction. bye Eg Edited December 12, 2012 by Evil Genius
nitrogen Posted December 12, 2012 Halycyon Daze, the variety with the very fat cuts that went around might have been the T. "huarazensis" - I got a couple of those and they are indeed massive.. It grows fat in general, much more so than either Lumberjackus or Eileen.. It's a pachanoi type though - looks nothing like the lumberjackus...
slice Posted December 13, 2012 Nice plants! Anyone growing the hybrid Lumberjack x Juuls ? We can probably expect a fatter plant and shorter spines I suppose..
zelly Posted December 13, 2012 lumberjack on the left, colossus on the right. jack has a girth of around 40 cm excluding the spines lumberjack branch pup colossus pup
nitrogen Posted December 14, 2012 Nice - that is a fat one you got there! BTW, the pics I posted are all of the same plant in the same pot - just at different locations and different times - it changes its appearance quite readily based on environment.. All trichos do, but I notice it quite dramatically with the Lumberjackus..
