Moving to PNG?

Recommended Posts

My misses & I have been talking about a fresh start with our two children 7 & 3, Papua New Guinea has been the hot topic & I would love to hear what you think?

I would like to hear the opinion of any members that live or have lived there or travel there for work. The first thing you read, two young kids, PNG :o , I to see the "prime time news" & if the stories & if the are right then its probably a bad idea but I put little faith in the news & am sure it does not reflect the full story of whats happening in PNG. Anyway I would love the opportunity to raise my children in such a place & any feedback or ideas on finding out more information would be greatly appreciated :)

Cheers

Good luck Joxy... I went there when I was 11.

The whites were living in compounds, with security...can get a bit crazy.

It's not Australia man...mind you http://en.wikipedia...._Cronulla_riots

Come back up North...one more cockroach won't make a difference.

^^LOL., Thats always another option on the cards mate , I loved living in NQ & would love to head back, just trying to work out some options as I have been a stay at home dad, part time gardener/handyman, reptile relocation for the past 3 & half year. My goal for the new year is to relocate & get back into/start a career. What makes me most nervous is employment, it has been a long time I have been unemployed & ever longer since I have applied for a job. I would hope raising two children would look good on my resume but I kind of doubt it.

I would never take a white girl up there. The risk of rape is very high, even half-casts are considered 'white' and are targetted.

It's a place where your family could get gang-raped at gunpoint right in front of you. That's the sad reality of it.

Guys don't get raped though, although you'll probably get held up depending on where you go. I've been held up 3 times in PNG and I didn't look rich or anything.

Plus it's bad for malaria and snakes, and parasites etc, and there are so many basics that are very hard to get there. Antibiotics for instance.

You could go alone no probs but you should never put your family in that kind of danger.

One more thing, your family would HATE it up there. After a month or so, they would be begging to return to civilization.

Have you ever thought of packing a van and going around Australia? You could find a nice little town somewhere that is just perfect for you and your family :)

my sister in law had a boyfriend from PNG for awhile.

when he went back she went out to join him for a couple ov weeks.

apparently he wouldn't let her out ov his sight for fear ov her being raped.

she said the food was shit to. very very bland, no herbs, spices, or chilli.

Apart from what people have already said about safety in PNG, there's also the question of whether you're white, and if so whether you have any serious connection to the place. If you are white and move there chances are you'll be living a life in which the vast majority of nationals are segregated from you by class, wealth (even if you're "poor"), and in many other ways. You'll be making a living where the vast majority of the population is barely able to do the same thing, and you'll be benefitting in significant ways because of your skin colour, education, citizenship, and so on. There is a lot of well justified resentment about whites and their colonial practices, and unless you're doing aid (or maybe political) work there I think it would be hard to justify why you should make a living in a country where the majority of indigenous inhabitants are unable to.

Didn't you just sow heaps of really special ariocarpi?

That would be enough to keep me rooted in one country.

PNG really doesn't sound too appealing after reading the comments in this thread..

New Zealand's pretty cool

Don't do it. A mate was on a trawler crew that went to shore and some ended up getting on the piss, they were robbed bashed and one was beheaded in front of them in the street. True story, the police said to get on the boat and don't look back. The wild west man, if you want to go in that direction I'd go Indonesia or even the Torres straites or Darwin its a mad place but easier to come back from.

I have seen many good alternatives above : a camper van to tour Oz - lots of jobs out there ; and Frog's NZ suggestion also - I've always wanted to go to NZ myself . I have heard of mega bucks earned in Kalimantan and Brunei , but that was long ago . Don't know the situation nowadays . Also , I have worked at a couple of Oz mines - the wives were also working out there . Those people must have been saving heaps - many were intending to stay on until they could by a house outright , without finance .

Damn, those are some crazy stories about PNG guys :o I had no idea it could be that rough.

If I wanted a sea change I'd go Tassie or NZ. Nice and cool climate, beautiful picturesque landscape. None of this boring, flat, brown, bland mainline aussie shite that I'm used to.

That, or rural China.

It wasn't that long ago when murder was considered a sign of manhood up there.

I know some people who've worked up there in a goldmine, the mine was fully fenced and patrolled by armed guards.

If they ever had to drive into town they were told if they run someone over not to stop until they get to town or back to the compound and report it then. If they stopped the 4wd they most likely wouldn't live to tell the tale.

There's no way I'd take my family up there.

From every single report I've heard it's a very dangerous place. High high ridiculously high crime rates...shame really because from what I hear it's also one of the most naturally beautiful countries in the world. But yeah, I'd never take women or children there..and I'd think twice about going there anyhow. I'm gonna get up there one day and check it out, but I'm going to seriously consider carrying a gun or two while I'm there.

Well thanks for all these comments & advise, I figured this is what would be said & it is a shame :( . I guess I will just have to go there on a holiday with gtarman & his 44magnum :P.

The main reason for contemplating this was work, I was offered the possibility of construction work there, five year contract, the big catch was have to be there six months strait at a time. I can't be away from my kids for that long! So I think I'll put this idea on the back burner.

Like Heretic said, many of you have offered great alternatives, & I will have to put some serious thought into it.

@ bogfrog, you are right I have got some great seeds coming up & my garden in general is kicking ass! The DOWN SIDE to this place & it members (Thats right I said DOWN SIDE) is that this is a great place(SAB) to hang out & the majority of the members are friendly people. There are people I have meet through general chat & personally who I would happily give my plants to, as I can see they have as much, some people more passion than myself.

^^THIS WOULD ONLY HAPPEN IF I LEFT THE COUNTRY! ^^

Cheers

jox

PS: I wrote "hang out" at SAB, now I know I sitting at my house & not really hanging out at SAB were ever it is, but it kind of fills like I'm hanging out with you all :)

i cant remember his name but who was that member who was briefly here from png, early last year...grew some really cool plants but then he cracked the shits because he got into a few very mild discussions that seemed to irk him, he has beautiful pics. but yeah i worked with a lady who said roughly what others have said about crime, rape etc. pretty hardcore.

 I had no idea PNG has such a bad reputation. My sister lives in the states but does a lot of work in PNG, so she's constantly travelling between here, PNG and the states with her young son. If I had to hazzard a guess, I'd say she's living in PNG about three months a year, though it's hard to keep up, lol. I guess it probably depends on where, exactly, you go. She works on one of the islands, and it looks absolutely beautiful from the pictures she's shown me. The locals sound really friendly, and she seems to have made a lot of friends. She's never given me any indication that she's ever concerned about their safety while up there.

^^ I'm sure there are many rural towns and isolated islands and such where there are no problems, but by and large, and in and around decent-sized settlements or cities I'd be wary.

It's probably just like western civilization in that cities seem to attract and breed assholes and undesirables, except magnified 100x over there due to poverty, a vicious cycle of bad upbringings, and a gaping lack of law and order.

But again I haven't been, and I wouldn't suggest it to anybody based on what I've heard.

sounds like it would be good if it were a relatively flexible contract, but boy 5 years commiting to work in a country which you haven't experienced personally sounds extremely daunting!!

my main consideration in a circumstance like this would be 'what sort of environment do i want my children to grow up in?'

Jobs are available all over the world but wherever you choose to go will have a enormous effect in who your children become and the sort of lifestyles they will choose or inherit.

there's an enormous amount of work waiting to be done in christchurch and they are screaming out for all sorts of construction and trade workers.

land is cheap and earthquakes are occuring less and less often.

of course moving to a town now known worlwide for its earthquakes. isn't exactly appealing, but there's money to be made and from there you can settle wherever you like.

my uncle went from earning big bucks in melbourne overseeing construction of big buildings, to struggling to get more than 2 days per week of work.. so now he's likely heading to Christchurch.

haha i know whatcha mean bout hanging out at SAB.. our minds are hanging out...just our bodies chilling at home with a cuppa and a fat one.

good luck with your decision jox!

Edit: typo

I know a few friends that have spent time in PNG as tourists/backpackers or working on scientific projects.

It does sound like a pretty rough country but I think some of the horror stories above may have painted an extreme picture. None of my friends reported violence of any kind, just a few of the normal hassles you get in any poor country - bad transport, scammers, and dodgy food and accommodation. I'm not questioning the veracity of any of those stories, just saying they are probably isolated and extreme examples that wouldn't happen to most people.

Personally I would not move there with kids, especially without knowing the place pretty well first, but it's high on my list of places to travel.

It's safe enough for most people, -just not for white females.

Women are not treated the same as men in PNG and having a white baby is a big status thing, and a perceived way to transcend their socio-economic situation.

Raping a woman is ultimately considered a legitimate way to have a white baby for some guys up there, especially when they think that the baby belongs to them more than the mother.

Porn is illegal in PNG too so there is this hyper-fascination with white girls as being 'the ultimate'. And there are plenty red-blooded, testosterone fueled males competing against each other.

A holiday in a safe place is one thing, but moving there permanently is pushing your luck big time.

You just gotta beat them at their own game, go up there and impregnate as many females as possible. 3 or more wives is big status up there.

That PNG member was named Cassius (or something like that) I'd love to get in touch with him.
