Beware of SMS from these b / s artists , and do NOT respond . It IS some sort of scam [ according to a google search ] , but I don't know what they're after , as I have not responded to any of their messages . They want you to email them - perhaps to find a way into your computer [ ? ] . They're like cane toads - hard to get rid of . Bastards are back , trying again .

I got one of these at 1am the other night from FREELOTTO in the UK.

I have no idea how they got my number. I know of another male that received one as well.

I must be the luckiest person alive, because I've won like 7 of those lottos! Millions of $!

But my better half says I shouldn't be greedy, and to let someone else win for a change, who really needs the money. So I have never replied :(

I have been doing a little research into into this Freelotto , and wound up at a site called ConsumerFraudReporting.org . It is all about identity fraud - using your identity . Once they get a couple of details from you , they can easily acquire much more via computers . This data is then used to open accounts in your name [ without your knowledge , of course ] , obtain false credit cards and loans in your name , commit cyber and other crimes in your name , provide false ID for felons , etc . . . I thought it was a bit of a joke at first ; or perhaps bait for some sort of promotion . In fact it is actually no joke at all , and according to the site above many victims have had horrendous experiences and repercussions from law-enforcement agencies . Beware people , indeed .

As to how these people get your number...

A few years ago I got given a list of every listed australian mobile number and the address it was registered to in 2004. So it was a list just from ones from 2004, but I imagine they'd use something like that to spam.

That list was kinda cool to have... pity i never did anything interesting with it.

Really ? I kinda like my iPhone 4. Has everything I need- camera, phone, torch, text, Sab and porn :) I find it to be a fairly useful tool.

What they do need on it is a little bubble level thingy and a lighter.

I spoze they are ok - but i had one and didn't like it much, so I switched to Android. I like it so much more cos there's less restrictions about apps n stuff. Although it does open up a whole new level of scammability being able to install apps from anywhere etc... I'm happy to retract my comment to save the derailling of the thread into a phone war though... each to their own phone - and down with the scam artist scumbags :)

Edit: Although... was that your iPhone that did the triple post???

Dare i say... theres an app for that

There is a spirit level app and there is also zippo app :P The spirit level app is useless in comparison to a real spirit level as is the zippo app !

That day was quite a few years ago. Iphones are computers, with almost no virus/malware protection. Someone posted a link last week about a US military virus that effects smart phones and hi jacks the camera.

You could make a lot of money investing in whatever company is going to turn out to be the market leader in virus detection for mobile devices :)

The free lotto scams work like this.

they 'convince people' they have won some random overseas lotto or similar, or tell you they will give you a job that pays shitloads.

all you need to do is supply them with your

- bank details

- name

- address

- phone number

- any other information that may help them gain access to your bank account.

they then compile this info, along with research from your facebook pages or any other online profiles. Most times if you answer all the questions in the email you have effectively given them all they need to know to gain access to your phone or online banking.

They are just using bulk sms-mailers now rather than emailers as people have learnt of the email scams but the phone ones aren't so common. It is just the natural progression of our scammers following as technology develops.

as well asthis another scam type works by if you reply to the text or call them it is a hefty fee of say $10 to do so.
