zelly Posted August 2, 2013 a one day update on my largest peruvianus, I'm like WTF as soon as I saw it when I got home from work today.... The main column was around 4 meters tall when it decided to go horizontal, and the tips of 3 other branches are equally clustered with soon to open buds. I just hope the horizontal tip finishes flowering before totally snapping off.... As for finding tricho flowering triggers.....IMHO it has a lot more to do with plant genetics than anything else. For instance spachianus flowers readily & continuously for a good six months, in the ground or in pots, some plants as short as 40 cm. Every bud produces a huge fruit, and spachianus typically gets around 4' then lay over and or snap off from the weight of the flowers & fruits. Pedro flowers profusely, also 6-7-8 months of the yr. I had pedro flowers in the middle of winter last year, with an outdoor temp around 0 C. Another factor I honestly believe has to do with the plant's inherent need to propagate.as a means of survival of species. I've another peruvianus that has a mild case of witches broom in that it is a serious clumper. Six months ago I whacked it back severely, placing the cuts in full sun, where they've remained. Totally immature, unrooted cut tips are now setting buds. They've had no water, no soil to grow roots in, no nutrients, and remained in full sun. Why are they flowering and not the matured mama plant that remains planted in my fertilized, nutrient rich hard pan clay soil? It's in full sun too. Now one thing I have noticed that does seem to have a direct correlation is bone meal makes my trich's pup like mad. Multiple branch pups appearing 2/3's the way up a 3 meter column. Major pupping at the base. I've got two branches on a saguaro that's only 2 meters tall. (btw, those pups look so awesome as they develop & grow out.) Another huge factor is soil PH, which probably is a much more critical for container grown trichs vs those grown in the ground. Here's a really cool chart on the effect of soil pH on nutrient availability: http://www.avocadosource.com/tools/FertCalc_files/pH.htm
mutant Posted August 2, 2013 absolutely awesome!! reminds me of talk of how some peruvian or paruvianoid strains like to lie down, crawl and the like, which I always found strange. as far as mine, no photos to show, I did not meet with the kk339 flowers so I am waiting of ozzie OMAR actually, as I think it, I have only seen w/ my own eyes only worn out to just withered tricho flowers. maybe I am not yet worthy of seeing them wow, either I had too many days off alcohol, or I am getting to be an alcoholic (some iboga please!!) Optimystic Posted August 3, 2013 (edited) That is just one awesome pic Zelly... . I know I would have freaked out to see that lol and that is also a nice chart to refer to..I finally got my first column flower a month ago at the end of June... was on a cereus monstrous (probably respandus).. I think a little over a foot long and only put in a few inches of soil to root decided to flower before the tip even started growing... it opened a little earlier than I thought... I was waiting to take a pic and fell asleep but when I woke up was still there.. I figure it was just stored up juice in the column or something... it was right after a couple of good rains so I think that inspired the flower maybe... just amazing to see one live... They are no Trichos but still quite gorgeous Im really hoping for a Tricho flower or 12 next year :D I was totally surprised when the little bud came out... it appeared quite alien to me they're so fricken fast and then the next day, gone ... should be plenty of them next year and hopefully some of the other species will bloom so I can try a Manzana ;) Edited August 3, 2013 by Spine Collector
M S Smith Posted August 17, 2013 These are a couple of the odd-ball T. pallarensis I grew from Sacred Succulents seeds. I didn't cross these, but there was a giant moth fluttering around it at dusk. ~Michael~
