Orange rust on my Pereskiopsis. Any Ideas?

Recommended Posts

Hi,

At the beginning of the year two of my Perekiopsis Spathulata started getting small amounts of orange rust spots on the leaves.

A couple of leaves died and went wrinkly on the tips.

I didn't really worry about it then, but now its warming up and the rusty dots haven't gone away.

It seems they may be halting the growth of the cactus.

Is there any way I could treat the fungus or whatever it is?

maybe a Copper sulfate or sulfur spray?

Images attached.

I hope someone can be of help.

Thanks,

Tio

the rusty spots wont go away, eventually those "leaves" will die and fall off.

have you checked for mites/thrips etc?

are they staying wet for days on end?

It seems pretty normal looking to me as DG said those leaves will die and fall off they all do eventually

More will grow in thier place or branches

Also as DG said check for mites and stuff but I think it looks absolutely fine

Edit:

You can always just pull all the dodgy looking leaves off now it won't harm the plant

Personally I'd also cut into 2 or 3 pieces and you'll end up with more so if any does happen to die for some reason something should survive the stuff grows like a weed

Yes I have checked for any unwanted insects or bugs, I couldn't see anything suspiscous.

So, just remove the leaves and dispose of them.

What if it appears on the new growth?

If it appears on the new growth then there might be some problem with it

I've got alot of Peres that looks whole lot more unhealthy than that

But it's fine

if you need Peres if this is all you have its very easy to get around here people give it away all the time

Just post up in the seed and plant exchange I'm sure someone with some spare will give you some for free or at a very very low price

I have those orange spots on my peres leaves also Tio and the leaves are dropping off. But I did only recently recieve these plants and I suspected it was just due to the aclimitisation. I have new leaves emerging and so far they look good but we'll soon find out.

Not to hijack your thread Tio, but can anyone tell me what kind of medium they use for Peres and what nutes they give it?

Have had mine in mostly sand for a while and haven't seemed too happy lately so wanted to repot, just looking for some advice. Cheers.

This orange stuff is really laying into the new growth on my peres.

Gave it a spray of pyrethrum about four nights in a row earlier this week. Killed the small amount of aphids it had but the rust is still going strong. Might pay the garden store a visit and step up the chemical warfare a notch. Not keen to have this infect the rest of my pereskiopsis
