That one, that's one of PDs crosses. I used to sell those seeds and there were quite a high number of mutants. I wonder who it is? And it's not me either

nitrogen Posted December 11, 2013 (edited) Haha I'd be open to that but I'm afraid 2013 produced minimal flowers for me - and none on my mutants.. Only 2 crosses did I produce this summer - T. bridgesii v. "Psycho0" x T. peruvianus v. "Paradeyes", and the reverse - Paradeyes x Psycho0.. That's a very fine cross, which may be making the rounds soon, but there was no windfall of glamorous mutant seed this year unfortunately.. EthnoGuy85 Posted December 11, 2013 How long have/had you been growing the mutants before they flowered. I live in an area where my specimens will probably never flower, but I can hope anyways
nitrogen Posted December 11, 2013 (edited) I'd been growing them for about a decade - The TPM was fairly rootbound - when it flowers though it puts out several.. The TPC I'd grown since it was just a 20cm chunk, which I bought some 10 years ago. Both specimens were purchased at a small and now defunct cactus/succulent store in southern California.. djmattz0r Posted December 12, 2013 Here is a TPM X SS02 "Terence" I got from Nitrogen thru the bay, it's definitely my favorite cactus in my collection and continues to amaze me with it's growth patterns. Here it is (top) when I first received it, in all it's glory with the pachanoi crest friend. It had a little cosmetic damage from spines rubbing since it was such a massive crest, I took one of the four arms and rooted it then planted it in the ground at my family's house. I will try to get a picture of it next time I am there but it is doing well. Here are some more recent pictures of it: While removing the arm that was planted in the ground I also took a few small pieces as grafts. Hoping to get it into the hands of as many people as possible eventually. Unfortunately one of the grafts was hit by a thrown beer bottle and a tip was broken off, I just grafted the tip so hopefully I'll have a 3rd healthy graft soon.

hostilis Posted December 13, 2013 Just did my first graft with one of these seeds. TPQC x TPM. Just a lucky draw out of the gene pool. Hopefully a monstrosity will grow from it. Super stoked!
EthnoGuy85 Posted December 13, 2013 Good luck hostilis! All my seedlings from that mix have some form of crest/monstrose tendency.

hostilis Posted December 13, 2013 (edited) I will be grafting all the others too. probably just like 2 or 3 from each strain. I'm getting so excited! Haha. Getting mutants from seed is fun! Edit: By the way hookahhead. I really like that "Cactapillar" TPQCxTPM. I hope that the one I grafted looks like that one! nitrogen Posted December 21, 2013 Ho ho ho! Ttis the season for gifting and receiving - life is good and ol' nitro finds reality to be quite enchanted and delightful these days - so I'm gonna share the stoke by sending two SAB'ers some of these mutant seed - it's a contest though, first 2 people who guess it win - here's the rules: 1. You can't have already received these seeds directly from me. 2. Guess which 3 strains of trichocereus ol' nitro finds most aesthetically pleasing - you just have to guess 1 of the top 3 - so you get 3 chances basically - only post 3 names max. Happy holidays!
hostilis Posted December 21, 2013 (edited) So... I'm an idiot and I was putting my jacket on near my grafts and i hit the TPQC x TPM graft and knocked the pot over face down. The seedling was lost in a pile of soil and knocked off pere leaves. Oh well. I have about 15 more chances though with that strain. I also grafted some of the TPM x N1 and TPM x SS02. How long did you guys/gals wait before grafting these? Mine are only about a month old and they're still pretty small, I'm just wondering if maybe I should wait a bit longer. I am not sure if you want specific cv types or just generals but I think you would like Bridgesii, Peruvianus and Scopulicola as favorites and anything mutant jumping it's way up there edit: if you're talking about which of your specimens you like most, I'd think N1, TPCQ, and TPM ;) Edited December 21, 2013 by djmattz0r
mushroomman Posted December 21, 2013 I grafted most of mine at about a week or two old but have had better success grafting them when they are a couple months old by that time you can see some showing there freakiness

rocky Posted December 21, 2013 (edited) Psycho0, TPM and SS02 would be my best guess. Thanks for offering this holiday contest, Nitrogen. I have longed to grow some of your Psycho0 crosses ever since I first started to peruse to Corroboree forums last year. I have a small amount of experience growing from seed, so they would find a nice home if I should be one of the winners - Cheers! hookahhead Posted December 21, 2013 Some strange things going on with cacti that are already strange to begin with... I removed 3 pups from the mother plant, yet pup #2 is strange. After I first grafted it, the tip showed the black spots that we sometimes see. I wasn't too concerned, as it had started pupping like crazy which I figured was due to the tip damage. Now the thing I find odd, is that all the pups even have the spots. Pup 2 is the only graft to show this... even though its right next to pup1... it will be interesting once I graft some of pup2's babies. "WTF" pup1 "WTF" pup2 "WTF" pup1 & 2 "WTF" pup3 And I just thought this was cool, this guy is ready to root himself! Psycho0xTPM
nitrogen Posted December 21, 2013 Yea Hookahead I've got a seedling that is behaving similar to the "WTF" strain you've got there - mine is a (SS02 x pach) x TPC but it kinda looks similar in the way it is growing, and it developed a bunch of little black rot spots near the growing cresty parts - this resolved itself though and it appears healthy now (although it has basically stopped growing since it is winter here now)..
