Mystery purple flower

Hello everyone,

I received this plant (attached) as a gift one year from a friend I have since lost touch with. I'd love to know what it is.

Every year around January I springs to life and produces this awesome purple spiky flower and "dies" a few months later, only to bounce back again the next year. It is only a foot tall and lives in a pot.

I recently transferred it to a bigger pot and noticed the root system was made of large, potato-like root bulbs. It got me curious, but I had no luck identifying it online.

Now I just want to know what it is. If anyone could help it would be much appreciated.

Hmm, how's about Dichorisandra thyrsiflora.

Looked like a ginger to me in some ways so i googled "purple ginger" which became blue ginger and then as above.
