khat i.d. ?

Question

hey all, any idea if this is khat, has an almost woody fresh tobacco leaf smell ( not cured or cigar ) when leaves are crushed but fades pretty quick to just a soapy leaf kinda smell. Found receiving almost no direct light. flowers have a sweet scent.

thanx

hi, thistime!

unfortunately, it's not Catha edulis, and i haven't got a clue what it realy is.

but i congratulate you for uploading realy very well, you even included the flowers, and only because of the flower pic, i am sure it's not Catha.

it, looks very much like Catha though, give it more time and maybe somebody knows what it is.

later edit:

soapy smell, would be correct, maybe i'm wrong, i can't say.

thanx Mr , i was hoping it would be, the poor thing was fully munted and at ground level so i only took 3 shoots for propogation ( it did have a nice lot of potential though ). hopefully they'll take. sorry every1 but i'm gonna keep the locale hush unless i know it would be for responsable prop purposes. might sound stupid but i weep anytime i see any life being stripped bare.

the pics dont show the serations very well, any more adice as to why not khat would be appreciated

I am with the others the flowers are not right and there is something not right with the leaves. The common Perth plants are the red strain and unless they are growing in full shade the new growth should be red at this time of the year.

thanx every1 :) flowers are damn close to that 1st pic, but mine had exhausted all pollen . @ GoOnThen , yeah it was in complete shade and only the stems and very tip growth was partially red.

yeh the colour threw me off, but parts off mine that grew under the shade did grow without the red.

but im no expert on them i guess, I would trust PH's judgment .

Just out of curiosity mate, what suburb did you find it in?

These were taken a few weeks ago and the plant is in full sun. The red leaves are now covering the whole plant and the leaves that are tucked under in the shade are a darker green than your pics show.

Send me a pm thistime and I will sort you with a plant

Catha's are notoriously hard to strike from cuttings.

yeh, not worth the hassle really. A nice strong cup of fresh coffee does the trick for me. lol

I have done cutting with some success but they can take there time to root and I am talking months not weeks :)

Suckers are the way to go and layering has been ok as well. I personally love the plant as an ornamental it is beautiful with is red colouring this time of the year.

Catha's are NOT hard to strike, they can just take a while to rootm sometimes. Narrow, red, green, white, all have a very high % strike rate if done properly. There are some good threads on this, PH I think has discussed how the type of leaf growth pattern can influence the success rate.

The last time I propagated I just cut off a 20cm shoot, stripped the lower leaves, cut my spade into the soil and jammed the cutting in there, watered it once. 100% grew.
