Just saw the ad too. Typical media crap. Is the article just on aya? Because the ad was full of shots of cactus and it was even the background image when it showed the details for the program. I wish people would just mind their own business.

I was also planning on heading up to the gardens in the next few weeks and I seriously hope that this bullshit doesn't jeopardise my plans.

If someone could record the promo/ad that would be good.

• These journalists probably did a few hours of research, and no doubt read this forum as well as checking out the store. From reading the forum, it's obvious that a large percentage of us grow cacti.

• Journalists usually aim for quantity over quality, so for them to try and "name and shame" all the plants that they see we grow is not surprising.

• It's obvious that they will use fear as the mechanism to increase their sales. A story like "everything is basically the same as usual, and the day was good" will eventually be ignored by everyone, while a story featuring a "new danger" tends to be watched "just incase" (even though these stories have all been done before, the public are usually not capable of remembering).

In terms of a response, I think at least some of the points we might make will be common to all of us:

• No-one has a right to restrict what we do in our own homes as long as we are not hurting other people. What we do in private is none of anyone else's business.

• All of these plants have a long tradition of being grown in a respectful manner, and we have a right to continue these traditions.

Lastly, I would like to point out that our modus operandi is largely as a result of the chilling effect of laws already in place: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chilling_effect_%28law%29

(Please PM me if you disagree with anything I wrote, or think that my points are not general to all of us, and I'll edit this post)

Nah, they'll probably show opuntias and cereus while talking about the 'dangerous' and 'worrying' use of cacti as a 'party drug'. Then they'll show a brugmansia while they talk about ayahuasca and say how people are using this plant to get 'high'.

I feel that this situation -for me anyway- can only be described by an image. Let's hope I don't need to buy a new tv in the near future.

Thanks for posting. Looks like it's about as bad as we could imagine, but not unexpected.

LOL, yep, that's our house and nursery. need to ask my solicitor if they are allowed to film my house while on my property even though we told them they are not. not that i care, but hey, I'm not going to make this easy for them.

TheExplorer - don't worry, it's going to take a lot more than some crappy media to change what we do, but maybe it is time to put up a gate and some media trespass signage ;)

"...enticing our youth."

WTF? Anyone who's ever actually tasted such a concoction would NEVER use the word "enticing"...

"Hey man, come to this cool party. Basically, we're gonna drink this tea that tastes like expired Aerogard, then spend about half an hour vomitting profusely! Then we're going to confront the nature of reality and find out what empty and depressing lives we lead! It's going to be so rad!"

Also, I'd imagine that the youth in question are too busy popping pills in clubs to give half a @#!*% , but I guess you already did that story, huh?

I wonder if this has any connection the last years attempt to ban all plants containing dmt?

Perhaps they got wind of it & figured it was an easy beat up ?

Christ these guys are so into their extreme reporting it hurts me even to watch that ad. With media reporting like that it's no wonder we live in the society we do. It's looks so extreme and unrepresentative I wonder what the options for sueing them might be?

I should have waited longer before reading this thread today - it's too early in the morning for that ad.

I don't think plants receive protection from our defamation laws. It seems to me that journos can basically get away with anything. I mean, most of these people don't seem to do much but make up inflammatory bullshit. Seriously, I don't know how these 'journalists' can live with themselves knowing that they're entire career is based on making up stories, so many of which end up hurting people.

I just don't live in that world of sensational extremism. I hate it when they force it upon me. I feel it's a kind of terrorism designed to impose extremist views on an intellectual outlook.

This is not going to be pretty, its only going to take someone or a lobby group to approach politicians.....

I misheard when I said 'free' - should have been 'freely available'.

I predict the story will be filled with all the shock media messages we expect but not actually that bad.

on the up side we finally get to see Wandjina gardens. ;)

seriously though - I have my fingers it goes the way of my prediction.

Depends if any pollies use it as an opportunity to boost their 'tough on drugs' image.

I hope they don't fail to highlight that consumption is already outlawed. I wouldn't want 7 news responsible for encouraging kids to illegally consume these legally available plants. Now that would be news worthy!
