Carved wooden pipe

Recommended Posts

I thought I'd chuck this up for anyone who is interested. I finished uni for the semester and to keep myself occupied between looking for jobs and tending to the garden I've been making this. The carvings aren't the best but at the same time I think it adds to the design.

The carvings are inspired by the mazatec culture with the leaf at the front being that of Salvia Divinorum. The twin right/left handed spirals on the side represent their absolute belief of male/female attributes in all processes. They say that mushrooms come up where the blood of Christ has dropped and to me 'god' or christ is formless/sexless so where the right hand spiral becomes a left hand and visa versa the mushroom appears.

Anyway enough of my description, let the pipe speak for itself.

Neat Shamanistic. What woods did you use, and what did you use to burn the pictures in with?

:)

Thank you Amazonian. I used oak for the stem and I'm unsure which wood was used for the bowl as I found it lying around in dads stockpile of wood for the pizza oven. I'll ask him tomorrow and let you know. I sort of cheated with the pictures as I drew them on with an engraver and then coloured them with permanent marker  I'm thinking of engraving some sort of image into the stem however I am unsure what just yet.

Lol, i was going to ask if you carved and then inked it :) .

I reckon, if you are going to carve on the stem, some more spirals, like plant tendrils?!. Or maybe a few spore prints? or both.

Anyway, its a great hobby, so dont stop at one carving.

:)

Yeah I was thinking of two spirals shaped like the Caduceus, which has connotations to healing :) I'm not sure I'd be too good at doing a spore print on the stem, my leaf shape was dodgey enough. I shouldn't be too hard on myself though since this is my first carving.

I certainly won't be stopping at this one, I have shown a friend and he's already asked me to make him one so I might have just found another hobby to add to my list.

if you have a soldering iron you can use it for wood burnings

I started carving a pipe today from a fallen eucalyptus branch, I plan to carve a 3d vine wrapping around the stem toward the mouthpeice. I will start a new thread when its finished.

And thanks for inspiring me to finally try carving something

Awesome Ethos, delighted that I inspired you. Funnily enough your words have inspired me too and I'm thinking up crazy wood carved pipes as we speak. Can't wait to see it turns out :)
