Mimosa ID

Question

Has approximately 10-12 seeds per seed pod. Was reading an old thread on here and the flowers + amount of seeds do not seem to match hostilis can anyone make suggestions, has no thorns either.

The whole plant.

I was going to say Desmanthus illinoensis, but that pod looks very different.

Irie,

I agree with Desmanthus sp.

This subject came up in study group I'm part of.

Hope this can help.

There are other similar species.

D. virgatus is prostrate or has ascending branches (sometimes long) reaching a height of 0.7m.and is not woody.

D. pernambucanus and D. leptophyllus are much taller with long stems woody at the base.

D. pernambucanus has 4 pairs of pinnae/leaf or less and pubescent stipules witha basal appendage. The pinnules are more numerous and narrower.

D. leptophyllus has 8 pairs of pinnae or less/leaf and glabrous stipules. The pinnules are fewer and wider.

Respect,

Z

thanks seeds were kind of goldy silver like marijuana seeds as well. the picture on the wikipedia homepage for desmanthus looks like a dead ringer to me.

thanks for the ID guys.

edit: will now be able to look further into it :)

Just an update i have narrowed it down to the two now trying to find more detailed information on how to distinguish between them.

The options i have are D. leptophyllus and D. pernambucanas

i am struggling to find any clear information on how to distinguish bwtween the two however from what you have posted above i am leading towards Pernambucanua as there are 4 sets of pinnae and 8-15 sets of pinules on each. Flowers and seeds match i actually think i am happy with this ID now :)

I think I ended up with one of these - was given as M. hostilis. Was thinking Desmanthus leptolobus, but I agree that either of the suggestions above look possible.
