Derkshaman Posted October 18, 2015 seedlings were falling over so i cut them, they'll develop better bases as cuttings. P3210637.JPGP3210638.JPG I see this practice done very commonly. Should it be routine? Would you recommend it even if my 3 year old seedlings are still managing to stand without stakes? When is the ideal time to make cuttings from a grown out seedling? And do the bases put back out pups with decent girth?
DiscoStu Posted October 18, 2015 got a neat little polaskia chichipe from buntings, pretty cool i've wanted one for ages
pinegapcontrol Posted October 18, 2015 i dunno man, i just read about it recently somewhere and it gelled with my thoughts, my plants were literally falling over though, i tried propping them up a few times but they just wouldnt take. if its standing fine i see no reason to cut it. i wouldnt say it should be routine, only if the situation calls for it or you have a preference. the seedlings i cut came from a batch of seedlings in one small pot, they were the ones on the sides underneath having to push to get the light so they became etiolated, also when i got the seedlings they were very hard grown so when i gave them better conditions they plumped up leaving a weak base. i would imagine the bases will pup, I'll cut them, pot them, give them time they will reach decent girth and as always, just my opinion. khhaven Posted October 18, 2015 I just repotted these two beauts Been waiting for that one in the back to pup but nothing yet and fed it some coconut water as well. Both are Trichocereus Pachanoi Matucana Ogunbodede and I have another in the ground I need to fertilize with seaweed.
Strontium Dawg Posted October 18, 2015 Stuck a bunch of em in the ground where they belong. Next to some nice Brugs and kanna for ground cover. My backs farked, did so much weeding too. And hauled 25 litres of water from a creek through thick scrub because I'm hardcore.

Spanishfly Posted October 24, 2015 (edited) Today I repotted my largest plant, not a cactus, but a Pachypodium lamerei, a succulent native to Madagascar. It was in a pot 34cm internal diameter and height, I moved it to a 42 cm pot, an increase in volume of about 65%. It hadn´t been repotted for a few years, so it was well overdue. The biggest problem was actually getting it out of its old pot - it proved quite stubborn. I ran a screwdriver round the upper part of the pot, removing a little soil and root. Then with my son´s help we laid it down and wiggled it up and down, gradually easing it out - sadly we broke off one of the branches doing this. The content of the pot was almost entirely root, which we lowered into the new pot and surrounded with fresh compost. Damn thing weighed a ton !!
