What did you do to your cacti today?

Recommended Posts

I finished filling my best window sill with seedlings. I need a better system of stacking these, so I can fit even more. The youngest seedlings need about 5 layers thick of paper in order not to burn! The seedling thing has been going really well for me this year- it's a ton of fun.

The bigger seedlings started getting fertilizer a couple weeks ago.

They got hit again today.

22373656323_2a6d3f9b64_b.jpg[

I also mulched some of my cacti. Here's a Peruvianus x Bridgesii cross... I think it's gorgeous. This is the only mature cross that I have in the garden as of now. This particular plant, in less than a year has grown from a 2 foot cut to an established 5 foot specimen- never had something grow as fast as this one. I just took several more cuttings from the motherplant a couple weeks back, who was hit by some grubs.

22373657653_715ddcb203_b.jpg

Went around and re-labeled all my specimens. I used to use popsickle sticks- although they have a better look, they get washed out by the rain.

Oh- I also got my hands on a bunch of nursery pots. 50x1 gallons, and 20 x 5 gallons. Should be enough to cycle the ones that I'm not ready to put in the ground.

Aztekium graft attempt has been seemingly succesful :) it's been about two weeks and is feeling very solid.

This is a photo of a photo, i came across it a little while ago looking through old family photos, this is my grandfather on my dads side (now deceased) next to what looks like a newly planted cacti garden at his factory in Chapel st melbourne. im guessing its sometime in the 50's/60's

pretty cool i reckon.

Yesterday: I washed the soil of my 5x echinocereus ridigissimus rubrispinus . Then I washed them thoroughly with pressure, there were coccons all over the arachnid spines and bodies..

Today: I sprayed them with Ca salts , and took some shots

P1140272.jpg

well one might not be totally rubrispinus , even though it has recently started to do redder spines

It would be cool to go back there and see if any of them are still around. Well, it'd be cool if some of them are still around, maybe not so much if they are all gone...

Put a bunch of the cacti in pots between my in ground ones to save space and get ready for the cold. I forgot to take a picture after I put the plastic down on the hoop. Had to get the 3 other greenhouses at work ready as well. Pulled a back muscle lifting cinder blocks :/

Don't read this if you are easily upset by cactus abuse
I don't remember exactly how these two Saguaro seedlings became "un-potted" but they have managed to hold on to life in spite of my gross neglect. These seedlings have not been in soil or had any water for over 1 Year! They were in a sort of "suspended growth" state, under 30% shade cloth and have just become grossly dehydrated. Today, I was cleaning up the area and decided to do an experiment to see how long it would take to "bring them back" if I can. I potted these two up and gave some water just to settle the soil. I will provide occasional updates with the results.

Re-potted my T.lophophoroides today and found these two little seedlings entangled amongst the roots completely underground.

TH I dont really think you need to treat black rot especially in controlled enviroment like yours... this having been said, it looks fine!

repotted some tacaquiresnsis and nitrogen TPM/C tricho seedlings

washed one of my large myrti breasts from a scale infestation with a toothbrush
