What did you do to your cacti today?

Recommended Posts

Opened this morning. So I (hopefully) impregnated her with the Cereus pollen I collected the other week.

Bitten with the pollinating bug,, I also gave a button some cereus pollen. No idea if it will work tho.

Are you giving the stigma a light dusting of cement after pollination?

really interesting stuff x-ing

Unfortunately not as I don't have any. I'll see if I can get a cupful today from someone.

I was wondering if smashing up a bit of concrete to fine dust and using that may work or if it needs to be cement.....

Got a pod on a cereus that I pollinated with yowie without cement dust, all the flowers I didn't pollinate have died and gone, the flower I pollinated with yowie has a fat pod that's getting fatter.....maybe it got pollinated by a moth or bat that was at another Cerus that night?

Nice flowers Upside. :)

I have my cereus inside & successfully x them with san p........unlike the opposite x, the cereus mother x seedlings are vigorous...mine are only a month or 2 old, I grafted a few a week or so ago...they look very cereus like...but red.

I suspect smashing concrete won't work...I'm not sure what it is about cement that encourages pollen uptake, I suspect it could be a pH thing. cement is highly alkaline, (Sodium bicarbonate, baking soda is mildly alkaline, may be better than nothing)

I experimented with x-ing of cliestocactus, using cement & not using it...both produced fertile seed...but the non cement fruit had very few weak seeds...whereas the cement fruit was full & vigorous.

Upside...you don't need much...I use a goose feather shoved under a cement bag...can't even see the cement on it...too much might dry the stigma up...take a little baggy with some cotton wool to the local building supply depot...rub it discretely over some cement bags...that would give you heaps :)

Couple of new grafts. Hopefully they both take.

Loph on a knuthianus that's been growing in the ground outside. Hoping for good, fast growth. I'm intending to do a few outside, in ground loph grafts in the very near future to make sure they've taken and started to grow before winter kicks in.

post-13830-0-49407600-1424226591_thumb.j post-13830-0-35146100-1424226592_thumb.j

And a hybrid seedling, (Scopulicola X Fat Spachianus), grafted on a spachianus right next to where I grafted a small Eileen pup last year. The Eileen has taken off well, it was only a 2cm pup when grafted, now it's about 18cm tall.

[EDIT} - here's how the Eileen graft started. - you can see the vascular rings came nowhere near fusing together as it lifted off and it still grows well. :)

I pollinated the other grandiflorus flower with itself then very lightly dusted the stigma with some bi-carb. Collected extra pollen from it to see how it goes with the button flowers!? I'm needing more flowers,, this interbreeding is addictive!

Found the whole root system above rhetoric soil....It's my fault as last time I transplanted it, I didn't tuck the rootball deep in the pot.

I managed to finally get some fruit! its come off a super pedro, but could be crossed with either a collectors corner scop or yowie i got off pd about 6 years ago. All three cacti were flowering at once furiously and the neighbour keeps bees so i guess it was bound to happen.

Im sowing the seeds out now but couldnt help tasting some of the flesh of the fruit, not bad either, a bit fruit saladish.

looks like its joined in the middle, shame about the outer skin shrinking, if its a success will have an interesting scar.

The bubble wrap blinds are a good idea.

Repotted these two from a single 12" into to 12"s. I was really surprised with the amount of root they'd put out in one season.

Took a photo of what I think is a Loph fruit. Can anyone confirm?

It flowered thrice over x-mas but no other Lophs in the area were also flowering so this specimen must be self fertile. It'll be my first fruit. :)

Yup, it's a fruit. Congrats

L. williamsii are the only self-fertile species in the genus.

Moved all my cacti outside for the 2nd time, had some great weather then a quick cold snap so they all came back inside to prevent damage to growing tips. Hopefully that was the last freeze for my area this year (fingers crossed)

I would let them get a bit bigger before separating them all but I know some people separate them pretty early and have little problems so maybe do half and half? See what works best
