my hoophouse probably didn't shake a stick at your GH @ Mutant, but this is what was left 2 winter storms ago

post-11432-0-67423300-1393971514_thumb.j ....

before that tarp got ripped in half I was using on of those radiating oil heaters but after that wind storm

it was pretty much pointless lol

what I did today was uncover my bigger trichos... I protected them with my 3 tier cactus protection system

due to winter storm 'Titan'

post-11432-0-27121400-1393971876_thumb.j post-11432-0-81487600-1393971937_thumb.j

It was supposed to pour down rain before it froze but it ended up freezing early and we just got sleet

and a bit of snow, with low temps one night about 17 or 18F, or about -8C. We've had several nights

into the teensF this winter, alot more than usual but these plants pulled through... the only big plant

casualties were PC Pachs and I save a tip of an LJ... the rest of the plants I saved were skinny bits.

I didn't want to chance it with this storm since some of the plants had already put out some new spines, I think some

of the Peruvianuses did at least... it was over 80 degrees F/ 27C the day before we got ice pellets!

I was lucky to run across these huge gas station styro cups (and some smaller ones)

all in all I used 47, to cover as many tips and penises

its still gonna get to just around freezing tonight, but they're not scared!

looks like a spring forecast after that... at last!

love the "knuthianus" looking one.

bitter experience tells me small greenhouses would be much better in my occasion (cost - repair) and you would still have one if one gets damaged (if you got only two small ones side by side) .

my GH might be big and solid construction and cement floor, but what good is that when you make it in a much exposed (to winds) area? nothing, a "hole in the water" as a greek saying says.

PS: if 8b can do -8 C, then I guess my big GH is in 8b and my home (and new small GH) is zone 9.

Hello all you good folk of Trichocerea! :3

I am new here and this is my first post but I'll try to paste in some images if I can figure out

I've been browsing here for years accidentally finding it in searches so figured I should come join you

Today in the cactus patch I pad-pruned the Opuntia ficus indicas

I shall plant them in the ground outside soon

...Began the first waterings of the year for the cacti with this new-to me stuff from my favourite uk cacti nursery

DSC00040.JPG

5% maxicrop seaweed fertiliser in a litre of rain.... 10ml for each cactus

from a fat 100ml syringe barrel that I used to use for delivering liquid carbon to the aquarium plants

....sat and watched them grow for a few hours to get through the midnight blues

DSC00020.JPG

DSC00022.JPG

DSC00023.JPG

DSC00024.JPG

DSC00029.JPG?transform=rotate%28270%29

DSC00031.JPG?transform=rotate%28270%29

DSC00035.JPG?transform=rotate%28270%29

DSC00036.JPG

DSC00034.JPG

I finally got some Trichocereus validus genetics too later that ....what turned into... morning

4 little fat spikeys came labelled as Trichocereus validusXechiopsis and when I rang the nursery who grew them

they had no clue whatsoever whether they were hybrids, or the slightest clue about anything to do with their naming

at all except for: "that's what the seeds came labelled as" :scratchhead:

2 look so much to me like the validus I've been hankering for for so long

and since reading some of your guys validus threads, 2 of these look very valid to me for now and I want to think the other parent is obrepanda..the other two look more like hedgehogs

Here are the two I think look most like validus (bearing in mind I've only seen about 3 pics on google but still a fair few here)

DSC00007.JPG

And a better one

DSC00033.JPG

Here are the hedgehogs

DSC00010.JPG

so that should be fun getting to the bottom of with regards to what on earth they really are

Also 1ml fed the short stuff crew in the tank ....

...checked to see what new had germinated and taquimbalensis was the newest

DSC00011.JPG

and the rest, no sprouts from the cool tricho hybrids from usa yet but it's only been a few days :drool2:

and I ordered a pelecyphora valdezianus (Was Normanbokea) plant,

and a lophophora jourdaniana, a friccii, and a diffusa to add to my williamsii collection.

and ordered a load of BEF pots again (!) - hopefully this time I'll actually get to see one

and some more seeds of : P' valdezianus, P' aselliformis, T' bolivianus, T' fulvilanus, T 'macrogonus, T' tacaquirensis,

T' taquimbalensis and T' werdermannianus from germany :)

I think that's all I did with my cacti today

Thank you and brightest blessings

oooh I can't remember to be honest, that hintonii though http://www.aristocacti.co.uk/paz02.htm

I bought it from a cool cacti nursery in uk; aristocacti, only a few months ago

They are really cool.. especially to talk with... and price-wise compared to who else I found.. just not much selection that I seek

I gather your in EU by mediterranean? if so they will ship I'm sure :)http://www.aristocacti.co.uk/

I must say, your cacti are awesome!!!!!!!!!!

do you know where I can get any validus seeds from at all worldwide? or even EU plants/cuts/pups

- with the exception of west/east seed farm tho' , I cant get any of theirs to germinate and it seems they may have same supplier as wss

and in their description it says it's the clumping one with the red flower anyway

I'm definitely after the white flowered ones

today in the cactus garden some overpriced undersized lophs arrived from some newcomer-bullshitting, over pompous and socially challenged cacti sellers in lancashire....

for the "safe for lttle fingers" section of the shortstuff crew which really pissed the kids off more than me,

I am saddened that yet another uk nursery has cottoned on to taking away the plant diameter/height sizes and just leaving the unlabelled

dreaded deadly "pot" sizes to rlly fk with newbies heads and thus incur more money ....and having overstated even the pot sizes,

and judging by the abuse and the attitude I received when I asked for a refund and told them they would be mailed back ...

I can tell this ones a tosser already , hooray for bank refund claims though - in case they don't play ball (I learned this the hard way before)

yesterday a gorgeous French pachanoi came but since i have a few posts pending , i forgot if I told you as it takes a day for them to approve my posts at the moment

gallery_14443_754_516187.jpg

and also the opuntia cuttings i took the day before that; I could'nt add later, after posting; with no edit post option findable

gallery_14443_754_422355.jpg

gallery_14443_754_664324.jpg

and the lophs that made the sunniest most awesome day of the year, a 2 hour fuming session in writing to complain followed by 3 very disappointed kids by the time the afternoon school run was over , wishing we could keep them, after being referred to the seller by a cactus society here

this one they sold to me as a 12.5cm jourdi

gallery_14443_754_733007.jpg

this one they sold to me as an 8.5cm will' caespi

gallery_14443_754_416971.jpg

this one they sold to me as an 8.5cm fricci

gallery_14443_754_380860.jpg

this one they sold to me as a 6.5cm diffusa

gallery_14443_754_860923.jpg

this one they sold to me as a 6.5cm turbinicarpus valdezianus, - and check out my daughter's deco patch pot :3 -

gallery_14443_754_600710.jpg

and this they one sold to me as a 6.5cm Ariocarpus agavoides and incidentally told me that bigger ones don't exist.. , my first one from spain i got 2 months ago is a lot bigger (in the back ground)

gallery_14443_754_587870.jpg

And if I'm not mistaken, I'm sure I read everywhere that at least lophs should be potted into a pot they only just fit....

I have another funky looking pach on the way too , I hope I get to post the pic tomorrow

selling cacti/plants by pot dimeter is wrong but its suitable for large growers

how much did you pay for the lophos, turbini and airios (curious about how much is overpriced )

Long time no word. :) I hope everyone is doing great!

I am missing my cacti garden and my country so much (and you guys too :) ). There's a few trees over here that I really like (I love oaks and yews), but so far it's not the same. Something really special about green leaves all year round.

Here's a photo of my cacti garden:

And here is all I have over here so far (1 Terscheckii brought from a random garden centre in Wales, and an unrooted Sceletium Joubertii). Wahhhhhhh ;_;

I did my first grafts all year... been short on space this year but I just made it work

pups from previous grafts onto pereskies... gotta love pups... there was a small hopping spider mama

guarding a blue peru and so I only grafted half the pups (cause she was using some to nest some eggs)

so i figured i'll just let them hop around a bit and then graft some leftover blue pups onto native

opuntias and maybe see how the combo works for unprotected winter hardiness... I also grafted a couple

nitro monster pups

now i've only got space left for about a tray full of grafts until its warm enough for the tomatoes and peppers to go outdoors

if the weather ppl are correct, then we're having a cooler than normal start of spring, and well that sucks unless we get

a cooler summer season... the cacti would love that :D

lol most of my internet buddys call me thunder, thunder horse or horsey :3 and £60 for the lot, the kids pleaded with me for us to keep them because lol , one had a berry on it and they would miss their new friends, so I caved in by the time they were trying to hand me their pocket money to cover the price.... the seller later admitted to the cheaper jourdi being sent as they had run out of stock of the 12.5cm ones

and said they would reinburse me the difference in price for that one only - edit - and took ages about it - £8

it's not so much the pot size being used but that it's sneaky to use only the pot size and they need telling Dx! :D the awesome uk nurserys display plant diameter and have manners.

mmmmm I bought 2 taquimbalensis-looking werdermannianus today from hungary, after seeing yours, I can't wait to spend years with these.

I watched my bridgeys and paccy pup like motherfuckers, checked that my little peyote was still kicking.. then pulled out some grass and weeds.

AND got excited... AND considered a relocation of my proposed cactus patch.. then got more excited.

Repotted 2xKK339s and a TIG (huge OZ bridge that might resemble psychoO) in large square pots. Square pots rule for surface economy and also the pots are better and firm "propped" by touching each other side, especially in my new small GH where the soil is not everywhere even.

Watered a bit some, took some shots of Stenocacti flowers.

Edit - having trouble attaching pics , outside today and noticed a pup growing through a rather nasty case of black rot on the blind side of the cactus, it seems to be going ok though , looked like the terminal shoot of the pup was well and truly smothered by the disease but it seems to be going well.

and a huge box of trichocereus species from the very best cactus nursery in all of the uk that I can find so far

and re-potted most of them

Trichocereus sp' Las Coimas Chile

sadly the trichocereus sp' Las Coimas arrived with a broken off areole so I super glued it back on before I could think of what else to do about it

has anyone had any experience with super glueing areoles back on and them re-growing like a graft?

Trichocereus candicans

heres the "pachanoi" I got yesterday from germany but was I badly and couldn't post

I guessed it could be peruvXjuuls , -edit- later was told knuthianus (next post down) and I also pondered 'altman monstruose' pach

gallery_14443_758_140683.jpg

Also I potted up some large cacti into atami/wilma type pots which are like a large BEF , hmm I should look more into what smaller sizes they make

gallery_14443_758_80644.jpg

gallery_14443_758_217626.jpg

I ordered some BEF pots from the cactus society again and wrote to a cool wild Trichocereus guy they referred me to; to see if he had any species I was after, called Graham Charles.. who also wrote a book about Gymnocalcium, I asked him if he'd written a book on Tricho's too in the email , fingers crossed that he has... but I have a gut feeling he won't reply, just something fishy feeling about the uk cactus fuddy duddys at the bcss forum and how they spoke to me once they knew i liked trichos ..makes me suspect some sort of internal politics is abound as per usual here and regular uk-tarring with brushes in this case to newcomer tricho folk, maybe like me; before theyve even owned a cactus for 2 years ..

-05/06/14 edit- still hasnt written back to me ...

-20/02/17 edit- still hasn't written back to me but fuck him, I have EG's book now !!!

I also got my first Lobivia - grandiflora :), an Trichocereus tarijensis, and one of the cactus shop's hybrid trichoechinopsis

and a rebutia 'ascott sunset'

Also I checked the EU for heavy duty square plastic nursery pots

Bought another German pach and a German scop and some hungarian werdermannianus

Bought a German terscheckii from Uhlig kakteen who really are awesome!

And continued the hunt for validus seeds

- sorry for any of the wobbly unclear pics, I've been in agony all day

Cool plants. I'm kind of confused about what you mean by "growing the areole" I don't think that putting the areole back on would do anything. Anyways, you'd have to offset the connective tissues for it to actually connect back to the core (I'd think) but since it's an areole, unless it was growing a pup or was young I don't think it has any more growth to do. Is it a new areole near the growth point?

That plant is cool btw. I have some growing from seed right now (T. los comias chile)

Unspeakable One, you have some great Plants! You really need a better Camera!

Trichocereus skottsbergii JN379 Penalta Perilla is actually a chilensis Variety but keep that name.Helps you keeping track of them.

And the Peruvianus x Juuls is probably a Knuthianus.
