Nemisty Posted December 26, 2013 Cheers mutant. Diversity is the name of the game. The majority there are bits n pieces from fellow Kiwi SAB members. Its reached the point where Im feeling pretty claustrophobic because ontop of this is several hundered 1 year old seedlings, plus my bigger plants. Whenever people come to visit my flat now I try to make sure they all leave with a cactus whether they like it or not.
glimpse Posted January 4, 2014 (edited) edit....not feelin the love question about grafts and pups Edited January 6, 2014 by glimpse
hostilis Posted January 4, 2014 When I do grafts with almost any rootstock I get pups. With columnars it doesn't happen as readily as with pereskiopsis, but it's natural. I would personally chop them off now, but that's just preference.
mushroomman Posted January 5, 2014 I made 7 crested TPM x N1 grafts out of 1 rotting crest and repotted about 50 seedlings
hostilis Posted January 5, 2014 Walked into my grow room to find that my kitty knocked over a table with 30 new seedling grafts on it.

Brendo Posted January 7, 2014 Took a few photos of a Pachanoi, I think it's very close to blooming
gtarman Posted January 11, 2014 Today I learned that when it comes to pruning and re-potting Pereskiopsis: 1. Gloves will not save you. 2. Bare feet are a BAD idea. Those damn tiny little glochids...you know beyond doubt that it's stuck in your toe...but you can't even see the bloody thing to get it out
Yawning Man Posted January 11, 2014 Removed a young peyote seedling grown from seed out of its pot as I am concerned it was rotting. Hoping drying it out will sort the issue. Peace
Pie'oh'Pah Posted January 12, 2014 Clipped shade cloth to the edges of my Market Umbrella and lifted most of my pots onto the table. Yesterday some of my bridgesii and pach suffered some nasty burns from the heat and sun. Also had to bring my worm farm inside as they almost packed it in, I only realized after their pale dead bodies clogged the worm tea tap.
EthnoGuy85 Posted January 12, 2014 Got these guys about a week ago. In a windowsill getting diffused bright light. When do I need to water these guys? Was tempted to today as they are starting to look like they need a drink.....
hostilis Posted January 12, 2014 (edited) I wouldn't water for 2-4 weeks after receiving them and potting them. Did you get them in the post? Edited January 12, 2014 by hostilis
EthnoGuy85 Posted January 12, 2014 Yeah took almost two weeks to get them so they've been without for about 3 weeks now.
DiscoStu Posted January 13, 2014 as a point of reference for the amount of water lophs need: i thought a loph of mine had rot so i dug it up and it turned out it didn't. for some reason i didn't pot it back straight away instead left it roots wrapped in toilet paper in the shade for about 9 months (6 of which was winter). just recently potted it again and it's fat and growing albeit a little worse for wear aesthetically. moral of the story is lophs really don't need much water at all and if it's winter where you are i wouldn't worry about it too much.
hostilis Posted January 13, 2014 (edited) That's fine for them to go without water for a while. It is better to let it starve for a while then to water it after it's been shipped, potted up and possibly has root damage. Then you could end up with no plants at all. I would wait at least 2 weeks *after potting them to water. Preferable 3-4 weeks. Edited January 13, 2014 by hostilis
mutant Posted January 14, 2014 it depends on the whole process, rooting, what kind of roots they had and all. it also depends on how much you are afraid of loosing a plant. and also if they are caespitosa, which they dont look like except one winter is not the best period to pot a bare rooted catus AND water at once, even though I do it all the time. with cacti that are sensitive / that have sensitive roots, or rare / slow growing cacti, you should generally follow what hostilis said. only I dont find lophophoras so sensitive or slowgrowing in their growing period, and especially so the caespitosas.
Snowfella Posted January 20, 2014 Just about everything seem to of got through our recent heatwave with only minimal scorching, can tell that some plants shrunk somewhat but nothing out of the ordinary. Just hoping for some well needed rains now to plump everything up again and kickstart another growth period. Here's some random snaps after a well needed weeding session this afternoon. T. scopulicola has started it's first new stem. New growth on an unknown, looks almost grafted. T. peruvians starting some new stems aswell as new spines from old areoles. Lovely coloured new growth, Pilosocereus azureus M. polythele going strong Colourful new spines on this Fero F. herrerae throwing some new areoles aswell. N. magnificus (I think) with a heap of new heads forming What happens when you weed alittle to carelessly around M. gracilis....lots of new plants And lastly S. megalanthus that graced me with another flower.
hostilis Posted January 20, 2014 Today I moved a bunch of new seedling grafts out of the humidity tank and then did 10 more. 3 L. alberto-vojtechii, 2 fricii, 2 diffusa x fricii, 2 A. caput medusae, and 1 T. bridgesii x huarazensis. (a couple of each)
afungitobewith Posted January 20, 2014 Hi everyone new to the forum. I know a few peeps here from other groups and I'm happy to finally join in on the fun here. So far today I watered my grafts and selected a dozen trichocereus to be used as root stock for the few I think could be growing better.
