Getafix Posted August 20, 2013 (edited) Well I have been busy over the last couple of weeks getting the garden ready for spring/summer. Have done the following: Spread stone through my cactus beds to help with water retention in summer and weed control Planted my Validus cutting out into the ground so the roots can get established before the harsh summer sun sets in Bought another temporary glasshouse from Bunnings and moved all my seedlings outside. Seedlings shown are Zelly's Validus crosses, Peru's and crosses from CBL, Nitrogens mutants, lots of freaks happening in there, very excited, and a bunch of new purchases from SAB store which include T.Peruvianus (Len), T.Glaucus, T.Peruvianus (Los Gentiles), T. Macrogonus (Blue JAC002) x T. Pachanoi (Omar), T Bridgesii clones Tim, Jess, Kai, Hans, Bruce and Con. Noticed an odd looking pup on one of my Eileens, will keep an eye on that baby. And generally admired these beautiful Peruvian's and Bridgesii hybrid. Edited August 20, 2013 by Getafix

naja naja Posted August 23, 2013 Moved 16 grafts outside since it's warming up now, this freed up more space to put 32 pere's in their place to graft onto in a few weeks when they are sufficiently large enough.
CβL Posted August 28, 2013 I'll lump together the last few days. FINALLY!!!! Finished my potting mix box. It's friggin' so hardcore, and strong, I could fill it with sinkers and it'd be all good. Has removable front slats so that it can be accessed, or go all the way to the top and it can store 0.88m3 of potting mix (would've been more, but I had to decrease the width so it would fit where I wanted to , when I measured originally and got the number 80cm, I forgot that that's the total maximum width, not member length). So yeah, getting a lot of potting mix in the next few days, can finally repot my army of seedlings into bigger pots. Today I dug out my Scop... but because the soil it had been in wasn't tops, it was quite weak, and the main arm snapped off :SThen I worked further on designing my cacti garden, shifting plants around and getting that all sorted. Bought rope earlier in the day so I can shift the spiny bastards a bit better. I'll move a Taq tomorrow, and start getting the rest of it all sorted. Should be finished in a few days (in light of my imminent move to the northern hemisphere).

qualia Posted August 28, 2013 i planted some of sab's excellent plants, a spiny pach and some sort of preuvianoid, thanks SAB!!
CβL Posted August 28, 2013 May as well mention it here - but I'll be heading to London-town to live for a while. All in the name of new experiences and getting use of my degree. We'll see how long I'll last. In the mean-time, I'm making my garden here at my folks place, nice and robust so that if I do come back, I still have a garden. Seems silly to sell everything or let it die, if you have the option to leave it in the ground.
qualia Posted August 28, 2013 dang london really? i'm sure you have greater opportunities but london is probably one of the few places i'd least like to live, seriously, social decline is starting there, and happening in ernest
Getafix Posted August 28, 2013 8 years in London, I remember some of it ha ha! Centre of all coolness and a place with no limits. Good luck, reckon you will head back to NZ one day. Getafix
CβL Posted August 28, 2013 Well I'm not planning on living there forever. I don't have a wife and kids to bring over, so it's just me, and a few possessions. I just need to last a single year (otherwise I owe back the relocation money), and then I can come running back if I so desire. The job is mostly to get work experience (it's fairly cutting edge, but also very rigorous - both good skills to learn), which can then either lead to a more enjoyable job somewhere else (research or so), or I'll just appropriate my skills and work privately on my research with a less stressful job and home-businesses to run the finances.I'll also treat it as a learning experience, and a personal development exercise (learning new habits, becoming way better at guitar, getting rid of old ones (=procrastination) ). I might even end up living in continental Europe, such as the Netherlands later on ( ) .I've researched many of the nature areas in London, and there are actually a few. And if all else fails, I'll pretend I'm an extra-terrestrial, and study these "human societies" from the inside by blending in.My cacti will be looked after too, and hopefully in the following years when there are flowers and such, then I will be able to send out hybrid seeds from my garden. If all goes to plan, the hybrids will be epic!
CβL Posted August 30, 2013 Nemisty (epically) came round today, and gave a huge hand in planting my cacti garden. We planted about 2/3 of the plants (all the biggest and spiniest ones), and got the arrangement sorted nice and tightly. The rest will be done tomorrow. Once it's done and tidied, I'll chuck up some photos.
naja naja Posted August 30, 2013 just found that the sun peeping through had burnt some of the crests and monstrose cacti of nitrogens X's, needless to say I am a little devo. I have removed the lid of the hot house so that they do not get burnt again/anymore and moved the worst one inside to recover. So spewing they are going to have some scaring now.
Jox Posted August 30, 2013 @CBL, fu#k it's great haven mates that are into cacti, life is so much easier working with big cactus when you have someone helping, I have been lucky to have 2deep here for a couple days this week helping me re pot large cacti & seedlings, I wish I could have a place were I could put my plants in the ground, I look forward to see the photos mate. CβL Posted September 1, 2013 Thanks Getafix and Jox (and everyone else). I'm really proud of it, it took a lot of planning and such, even though it doesn't really look like it now. Since the photo, I've managed to squeeze another 2 plants into there, and a 3rd is one the way haha. :D
CβL Posted September 2, 2013 Today I repotted some seedlings out of ice-cream tubs into pots. Somewhere between 80-100 were done. Tomorrow I'm aiming for the rest. :D
Rum and Monkeys Posted September 10, 2013 I feel like this thread hasent moved much, considering its spring lol (not being rude or what ever, just want a subtle bump ;) ) In the last two weeks, I think maybe 21 nice size trich cuts and 9 of Jox's nice little seedlings have arrived, so they are rooting and being nurtured.... That's about it on my end Photo's people's, PHOTO's!! (the computer won't read my phone )
naja naja Posted September 10, 2013 tip, email it to urself I moved most of my nitrogen graFTS outside to make room for more. Last few of nitrogens X's that I grafted recently have started to show growth over last few days. ileft the lid off for a night or two after graftijg and they dried out a little and many failed, but still a few powered through so wasn't a complete loss.have 60 more pere about 10 days away from grafting. I want to lay down a bucnh of astro seeds this season.
bogfrog Posted September 10, 2013 Sent some cacti to some other cacti-lovin peeps. Feeling very good about it, now i have a bit of breathing room among the many plants I did these two grafts, one is an astrophytum superkabuto, i grafted it because of the odd colour, the rest of the seed batch are green. The other is my SS01 x TPM crest. It was looking a bit pale and i think it struggled with the cold over winter so i thought i'd better graft it just to be safe, as this is the only crest i have from nitro's first gen mutants.
Nemisty Posted September 12, 2013 Im too scared to attempt any grafts yet. Im holding off till the night time temps warm up a bit more. My house isn't too well insulated lol. New Ariocarpus added to the collection. Only cost me $30 bucks. And my new favourite gobular. Acanthocalycium glacum Got it super shriveled up. A couple of waterings and its slowly becoming turgid again. Another collector just up the road from me has one also, so we'll be trying for seeds this summer. Hopefully get a few spare to share around
