My 1st Loph Seedlings

Recommended Posts

Hello,

I sowed my first cacti seed approx 2 weeks ago (L. Williamsii) which I bought of AE and to my delight have approx 50% germination rate so far which is very pleasing. I've noticed though that all the seedlings are have a distinct orange tinge to them as you can kinda see in the pictures below (the camera doesn't quite show them as orange as they are). Is this anything to be worried by or all just part of raising cacti from seed?

Nice one, the pale colour could indicate a lack of light- but that's how they look when they first emerge too. Looks like a pretty organic medium you have there, should be fine if your planning to graft in the next couple of months or so

I have them under fluros so I might move the light a little closer as there is some distance between them. Yeah its a pretty organic mix its basically just good quality store bought cactus mix with some crushed charcoal but they will be grafted once my peres stock has a chance root and get comfortable in their pots which shouldn't be to long hopefully.

I'll update with some pics once grafted.

Its hard to make out the charcoal in material in the photos, I spose I associate black with wet humusy material.

Have you got them on a heat mat or something or just under lights?

they almost always, look like that when they emerge, and it takes them some time to green up, over summer this goes very fast, but over winter, this can take forever because the hardly grow.

a fluro in a sealed compartment ought to be warm enough though to green them up fast.

Yeah no heat mat cactuscarl I've just got them in an enclosed box which keeps them a steady temp. I also moved the box closer to the lights as suggested earlier and some have already taken on a greener tinge.

Thanks congojack!
