Bretloth Posted June 15, 2011 Hey guys, got what looks like the biggening of rot on the tip of my roseii 1 and wierd brown splotches on a fields pach x psycho0 seedling, any advice appreciatted!
Gunter Posted June 15, 2011 don't worry about it yet, nothing that looks fatal
Bretloth Posted June 15, 2011 The Roseii will be fine, worst comes to worst can always cut it. Really don't want too though, she's way too damn pretty. Bringing them both inside at night. It's the little one that worries me, hope it's just sun burn but if it's an infection it's right through, fuck it really looking forward to watching that one grow Giving them full sun from 10 ish when the dew has gone and bringing them in at night. Don't know what else to do.
bogfrog Posted June 17, 2011 i had a wee rot patch like on your rosei on one of my pedros last year, i was a little worried but i shouldnt have been as it fought past the rot even though it was being rained on and frozen every night all winter. dunno bout the seedling tho, that looks much more life threatening
Bretloth Posted June 18, 2011 The tip rot spread to another rib, seemed to have stopped there so far. Keeping a close eye on her, treating with a systemic fungicide but might have to cut, i'll give her chance to fight it off first though. The little one seems to be improving, got it inside near a radiator in low light. Think it was sunburn related.
Bretloth Posted June 23, 2011 Update: Going to have to cut the roseii I think, keeps spreading The seedling has recovered after being brought inside, had to be sunburn related.
Khala Posted June 24, 2011 Woah, that definitely doesn't look good. I'd cut it, but that's just me.
Evil Genius Posted June 24, 2011 (edited) Hi Bretloth, i had pretty severe cases of black rot that all healed by itself. But in some cases, the black wound is still present. Even 3-4 years after the infection occured. So i´ve never seen it disapear or something like that. I wouldnt be very concerned because of black rot but you CAN cut it if you want to be on the safe side. But Chances are the black rot comes back another place on the same plant as it seems to be systematic sometimes. You could cut it, safe the tip and keep it dry for a few months. This way you can use the stump for a cutting and still have the tip left in case it heals. I doubt its very contagious. M S Smith Posted June 24, 2011 Bretioth, put those plants back outside...it is a bacterial or fungal infection and having it indoors out of the elements is going to help it spread rather than stem it. Good air circulation and sunlight are what you need. The soft rot might spread initially and zap the entire tip of the plant, but it will eventually overcome it. I have a monstrose/crest T. bridgessi that has it pretty bad right now, and though the rot seems to jump around the plant a bit leaving it out in the elements always keeps individual spots in check and I have never had plants die from it...unless I cut the plant thinking to save it but only end up exposing more surface area to the infection. Put it back out and just let it be. Here's a plant that made it though just fine even though I thought it the end. Good luck! ~Michael~
Bretloth Posted June 24, 2011 I had one do the same thing last year and it fought past it, but it had stopped spreading within a week. This just keeps going. Every rib is infected now so the tip is going to terminate anyway, so i'm cutting her tommorrow just to speed up the process. The rot is systemic with this one, she has scars previous, albiet only little ones. When I do cuts I always quaterize the wound and have never had an infection issue with that. I'll save the tip and see if i can get it to root and pup, worth a shot. Once the tip has formed a nice callous i'll stick her back outside. Cheers for the advice guys!! Much appreciatted
George Posted June 24, 2011 (edited) Don't take my word for it but keep organic ferts away from roseii and bridgesii. Urea/nitrogen in my' opinion is the culprit. These plants are just to good at slurping that stuff up and then chokes on it. Other than that it might just be the point where the soil temps raise making it more bio active, thereby shocking the plant OR, the plant has been shocked into winter as in the cold/dormant switch was too sudden. I found kelp liquid the safest for cactus feeding. Otherwize feed when they are busy growing not to start them up or the logic being to bring them out. That could be a fatal mistake, wait for them. The soil temsp becoming bio active with the addittion of ferts could snowball into a nute bomb. Edited June 24, 2011 by George
Bretloth Posted June 25, 2011 It was definatly shock that started it off. Had it inside to root it and then was adjusting it to outside when the tip rot started. Everything else was fine adjusting except the roseii. She needed a bit longer obviously. Live and learn. Cheers
